Speedo needle broken.

Got a camaro with 7,000 original miles and the speedo needle pin broke. Don't want to switch the gauges bc it's a stock iroc and trying to keep it stock. Also don't want gauges with more miles than it has.
Does anybody know if you can get a speedo from another gauge panel and put it where the broken one is?

Yes, but prying off a plastic needle, which after decades is very fragile, and putting it on another speedo would be difficult. Then the needle would probably require some fussing with to make the speedo read correctly.

Re: Speedo needle broken.

Be easier to do with the speedo out of the car also.Ive replaced a couple that broke off.The pin is very thin to start, but as James said, bit of a fuss.

That pin is about 1.5" long & requires partial disassembly to remove/replace.You can some times "band aid" fix by using a tube that fits over the OE pin.Depends on where the pin broke though.Replacing requires a good pin from a donor speedo.

Re: Speedo needle broken.

Swapping speedo needles is very easy,..... once the speedo head is removed from the car. There is no need to ever touch the needle mounting pin.

Pull the speedo head from the cluster and look at the back of it. There is a circular piece of metal that moves with the speedo needle. Move the needle to the Trip odometer pin and then make a mark on 'circular metal' piece that is equal to the position of the speedo needle on the front of the gauge.

Then find a way to hold that circular piece of metal from moving. I find electrical tape works fine; just be sure it sticks good and it will be fine short term.

Hold the circular metal on the back of the speedo head with one hand while you TURN the speedo needle

This will loosen the needle on the pin and it can now be pulled off with little - if any - effort.

To install simply position the replacement needle on the pin then push down slightly while turning it back to it's starting position. Then remove the tape, verify that the speedo needle is lining up with the reference mark that you made in step 1 & and re-install the speedo head in the cluster. The speedo should be calibrated very close to exactly where it was originally.

Adjustment; If you find that the speedo needle is always HIGH or always LOW: The cluster can be re-installed to the dash housing and the lens can be left off. The car can then be test driven to see how accurate the speedo is. It IS ( just barely ) possible to reach a finger behind the speedo head while it's installed in a cluster to put pressure on the speedo needles "circular metal" piece and hold it in place while using the other hand to slightly turn the needle on the post to adjust for accuracy. It's not easy; but I have been able to do it. Once your comfortable with the accuracy - install the lens.

If the speedo is higher than it should be at low speed and lower than it should be at high speed ( or visa/versa ) than the speedo head itself is bad and needs to be replaced.

Good luck !
