Re: steering column
89 only unless you have deleted the VATS. Also has to be correct trans. 90-92 won't work because they gave airbag.

Re: steering column
its a security system in the car that when it ill not start at all without a specific key made specifically for the security box under the dash and honestly its holy hell removing it cuz your ecm looks for the signal and if you just rip the box out it will never start

Re: steering column
also, the wiring into the ECM is different, you will not have turn signals and other electrical functions with any other year harness. this is for the TPI motor. i'm not sure of what will not function with the TBI>

If your current column has delay wipers than be sure the replacement has delay wipers too. If your current key has a chip on it than you've got Vats,..... Does it have a chip on it ?? Does the VAT's system in the car work ??
Does not HAVE to be from the same tranny,.. Auto column will work in Stick and stick column will work in auto. ( not as Safe !)
I don't understand, The ECM ???- could you explain ??
IIRC all 84-88 columns have the same dash connectors ( High Beam, Ignition, Wiper ) The only difference with the 89 column was the addition of VATs plug. Sure the Berlinetta and GTA columns are different, but all the "regular" cars got the same basic columns.

Re: steering column
Take an OHM meter and measure the resistance in the pellet in your VATS key. Take the same meter and go to radio shack and get a resistor with the exact same reading and place it in the orange and white harness that runs to the key. This will eliminate the vats system from the column. I have done this to all my cars. The Vats system is still active in the ECM but it reads the resistor in the harness and not the resistor in the key. You can also get a regular key for it now and not one with the pellet in it.
