1988 A/C/heat Control Unit

Hi All,

I'm not sure what happened, but I just tried to post a question and it doesn't look like I was successful in my post, which may have been due to the lengthy description timing out my access?

In short, I have similar problems that I've read about on here with the manual A/C/heater control unit (RPO code C60) loosing vacuum and defaulting to defrost mode, probably due to the A/C control valve age (GM PN 16032395, ACDelco PN 15-71350, O'Reilly's/Murray PN 36692, Napa PN 207708). I've had no success in finding any new valve's available for purchase, and I have a new/used control unit on order from Hawk's, but I'm not sure if refurbishing the original or replacing with another used part will fix the problem.

My question is, is it a drop-in replacement to put an electric control unit (RPO code C67) into a car that originally had the manual unit? YearOne shows the electric unit on their website (PN HC89) and it has the right vintage, 1988 Firebird with LO3 305 TBI, but I'm not sure if it would work with a car that currently has a manual unit, or would there be a lot of tear up behind the dash to get it to work?

Has anyone tried this?

Thanks in advance!!

If I understand the question, you want to replace your manual AC controls with the electronic push button controls found on digital dash cars. The short answer is no, it is not a drop in replacement.

The manual unit uses cables and such to control temp, etc. The digital unit uses servos.
I am sure it is possible, IF you can find a parts car. My local JY just scrapped an 87 bird with the digital dash. So they are out there.

No it's not drop in. The electronic control uses electric servos on the heater core/ vent box and temp blend doors. Yours has vaccum servos. You would have to swap in all the electric servos as well. I do t think those are readily available.
I believe there's a thread on the site somewhere to repair the leaky selectors.

In case you want to try fixing the one you have, the video in this thread looks promising.
