Rear Window Defroster - Is it working? Why is condensation building up?
G'day gents. My trans am has very bad window seals [I just got it, haven't repaired anything yet]. Namely the rear hatch. 83 Firebird Trans Am.
The rear hatch is covered with condensation on the inside. Can't see a thing. I just roll the windows down for a while.
1) Where is the defrost switch? I can't find anything... There are defrost wires in the rear windshield.
2) Why is the condensation building up? Do I need all new seals? Are there any rain-x like compounds that I can coat the inside of the windshield with?
Funny story: My old van [89 aerostar] had a very bad windshield rope seal in the front. Blower motor had electrical issues with wiring, didn't work. Water would leak from the top and dribble down the windshield on the inside. It was frozen outside, and as the ice built up on the inside of the windshield I had to scrape it off. All the way to work. I'm happy the heater works in this thing :P
I've had cars with this issue before, but I never did learn as to why.
Thank you guys,
-Tuna

Defrost switch should be right under the gauges above the A/c controls. With how old the car is though, it's entirely possible your car wasn't equipped with a defroster originally, and the hatch was swapped out from a defrost car.
Any kind of liquid moisture in the car will evaporate and condense onto the glass. If it's building up on the rear hatch, feel the carpet in the hatch area, see if it's wet. If it is, you'll have to find where the leak is coming from. Defrost will do little to nothing to get rid of all that moisture on the glass.

Carpet is soaked in the rear. Thanks for the information, I'll replace all interior seals and see if it stops building massive condensation. I do have to keep the car outside. Thank you NowhereFast.
