'86 spedomoter question

so i am in the process of fixing the speedometer cable and i have come to the conclusion i may have to replace the gear or gears inside the transmission output side. what would all be involved with this? i have verified the cable is good, the speedometer is good. is there any other things that could be the problem?

Re: '86 spedomoter question

It's not uncommon for the speedo gear to snap off at the shaft. Unscrew the cable off the trans, then remove the speedo gear housing from the tailshaft for inspection.
