Ok so i got a big eye sore in my f body i have black seat belts that have turned purple on me from sun fading now i know classic sells reproduction ones but the price is way to high for my liking. Has anybody ever redyed their seatbelts if so how is it done since i wanna go this route the body/upholstery guy at work told me that a interior shop could do it but he also said its kinda easy and has faith in me that i could do it so could someone fill me in on how to redo them

 

I don't know how it would take on seat belt webbing, but I've used Rit Dye on house carpeting (for a dorm room).
The biggest trick is to follow the directions EXACTLY otherwise it doesn't "set" correctly and will bleed off on your clothing.
No guarantees that it still won't, as I said, I've never done seat belts, but if you miss a step, it will bleed for sure!

 

It is commonly said that dyeing seat belt webbing will weaken it and is not recommended.... How much weaker ???

I'm in the same boat as you, I have a convertible in that I have grey ugly seatbelts with a black interior. I also think that the seatbelts have weakened over the last 25 years from UV exposure. Instead of dying them I have thought about rewebbing them. I called a few seatbelt restoration shops and it seems the going average is $130 per seat to get them rewebbed. This is for 3 point retractable seat belts. And if you need the springs redone that's an additional $60. My next thought is that I have a heavy duty sewing machine and I can purchase webbing but the safety factor is a concern, but I'm sure there's a way to test the strength if the stitches.

 

I sere new ones on Ebay for $120 or so... But limited mostly to newer thirdgens... I may just dye it & hopes I don't die...

Yea seems like im just gonna have to suck it up and just get reproduction ones from classic industries
