can you dye carpet?
Hi all, I have a 84 Z28 with charcoal interior/carpet. I am restoring the car and am wondering if a guy can dye the carpet due to the sun fading it... Thought about buying new except I know aftermarket doesnt fit like oem. Also i dont really want to mess with renting a steamer to get it to fit right. Any ideas on dying or even leads on new that fits well will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Duplicator makes a carpet paint with colors that are almost perfect match to the charcoal grey interiors. I got a few cans from AZ and plan on trying it on mine once it warms up. Read a lot of good reviews.

Re: can you dye carpet?
As others have mentioned there are good quality aftermarket carpets available for are cars I've never had good luck with trying to dye carpet but SEM makes a quality paint/dye that is good for plastic and carpet if your plaining on going that route

Re: can you dye carpet?
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Mantaguy, have you used acc brand? It fits good? like the contours and such? The car is not being restored to original, but is getting border line frame off.. if there was such a thing. So I want not only the outside to look cherry but the inside too. Im working on posting pics so everyone can see. I did keep all the original stuff so when im tired of buying tires, I can put the L69 back in her.

I went with ACC and I had to do some trimming and fitting for a perfect fit. Was kind of a pain but it looks great now.

I also got it with the Mass Backing,it's what your car came with from the factory with,I highly recommend it for insulation, especially for T Tops.

Re: can you dye carpet?
Sweet, thanks everyone. Oh, what about laying down some sound deadening material? then the mass backing/carpet? It is super... like bass in the car when idling and its like the perfect tone that hurts my ears. A drive thru.... ha.. fat chance. I love a good sounding exhaust, but there is something my head doesnt like about my car when it idles. vibrates my brain.... lol

Re: can you dye carpet?
I've used Rit dye on several carpets. First really vac and carpet clean the carpet. While it's still a little bit damp use the dye. I get a spray bottle (like windex) and put the whole bottle of liquid dye (not the pellets) in and fill it with hot-hot tap water. Wear gloves and if the carpet is still in the car tape and plastic everything you don't want dyed. Go over the high traffic area a few times. Then let it dry. It has to be completely dry or it will transfer. Then I vac and vac it out. Take a light cloth and rub to test if you've got all the loose dye out. It won't change the color but it will freshen up. Always go darker and the color selection is limited.
The made for carpet dyes may be better but it is cheap and lasts a pretty good time. Just make sure you really get it dry before using.

BTW, I've used red, gray and black. The gray is sometimes hard to find. And it's in a strange department like with laundry detergent.
