Re: Headliner Glue?

I used NAPA Heavy Duty Headliner Carpet Adhesive, made by Permatex.Worked pretty good, it comes out of the can different than 3M,It looks like silly string. I never had any trouble with any 3M Product, I know when I use the 3M Spray I let it get tacky first before I Lay anything down.

Re: Headliner Glue?

The Permatex mentioned above works well and is a few dollars cheaper than 3M.

3M makes several "headliner" glues. Most people make the mistake of getting the wrong one. None of them will work properly except the Super Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive. Hint: it comes out of the can like silly string also.

I keep both the 3M and the Permatex on the shelf.

Re: Headliner Glue?

Yeah, I have to agree, you may have got the wrong headliner glue from 3m. I know I used a few different ones that didn't bond for crap. Then when I replaced mine in my Fiero in early 2000 the kit came with a heavy duty 3M headliner spray. Then when I replaced the liner in my Z in 2005 I used the same stuff. In both cases, the headliner is still holding strong with no sags or separations at all. Oh yeah, and that's also considering both cars have endured many years of AZ hot summers.

I know you said that you followed the directions closely but if you used the original headliner board, I hope you paid extra attention to getting all the foam off of it, if not, it doesn't matter if you slather the glue on with a brush, it won't stick very well.

Re: Headliner Glue?

Get a decent contact cement. You can brush, roll, or spray it on. All you have to do is cover both surfaces with a very thin layer, wait for it to dry enough that it doesn't leg to your finger, then stick them together. Good luck getting them back apart.... It's very permanent.
