Hatch support stud thread size?

I went to replace the hatch supports and backed out the stud. Nice easy 15 minute job, right?
It didn't come out easily. Looks like some knucklehead crossthreaded it over the past 20 years (at GM or otherwise). I just searched the 'net and this forum looking for the thread size so I can buy a tap and chase out the threads to make it right. I can't even get the stud to start back into the hole the way it is now, I tried. I started taking the other side out, but it felt the same way, so I tightened it back down.

I presume it's metric like most of the car, and I would rather pay more for one good tap than go get a cheap HF set that is likely to break the first time I use it. (Buying a good set would cost much more than the hatch supports and I've lived without taps and dies for the last 25 years of automotive work.)

Thanks
