I just bought this off Ebay. It is for an late 80's corvette hatch switch that is mounted in the door. Don't know if I can mod the to work in a third gen but for $17 I'll be the guinea pig. These are available new I believe so if it works it would be a big plus for us.

 

It's just a wire switch so I'm betting it can be modified to work,.... got a part #, or a an idea what years it was used on the Vetts ??

 

It is a hatch switch for late 80's corvette that goes in the door. Think 84 to around 92. They get the yellow script after that. There is also a push button switch for same years corvettes that must go in glove box. It looks like the basic button switch that many 80's cars had in the glove box. Thing I like about this one is the script even looks similar to a Camaro.

 

The hatch release switch is just a simple SPST switch that grounds the coil of the hatch release relay.

Should be easy enough to adapt to the existing harness.

 

Adapting electrically isn't an issue more concerned with physical size. I'll know more once it gets here via snail mail.

 

actually i did this same thing with my 87 last month. Look at the back of the switch, the panel the wires come out of is the same size and shape of ours with the prongs. A slight wedge of a small screwdriver will pop them both out and you can switch them around.

Ill try to get a picture tomorrow on my old switch to show you. Its even easier than re-wiring.

Also it is a direct fit, and the one i got even had both tabs in great shape, snapped right into the center console.

 

pictures as promised, you can see the tan board is retained by two clips on each side, gently prying these out will allow the board with the connectors to pop out of the switch body. Be careful here as the contact in the body is spring loaded, not a lot of force on the spring, but could be enough to pop it out on you.

These pictures are of the vette switch, not the camaro, the camaro has two brass leads coming out of this panel, not the wires. The great part about these switches is i believe they used one switch per door in the vettes, so two switches per car, and they were out of the way of elbows, sun, and spilled stuff.

 

Thanks. Simple Simon fix. You do see these for cheap and in good shape compared to our third gens. They do not make new anymore unfortunately, which surprises me, because they could easily be made for Vettes or Camaros.

 

So I received the hatch switch. The print wasn't correct but in great shape. My biggest concern was the tabs that hold the switch in place were intact as mine were busted off on one side. To change them over was really easy. Pry the back part where the wires connect off on one side with a small screwdriver and it will pull free. No wires to remove as you just switch out the backs. So the corvette hatch switch that goes in the door (not the glove box) will work perfectly.

 

 

At this point you just push your old back into the new one and you are done.

Considering the corvette ones seem to be more plentiful and in better shape than third gens, I'm happy to try this and have it work. Hope it helps others.

 

I just picked up a similar switch, said to be from an 84 Corvette.



It's a 'rocker' type switch that only moves 1 way, there is a metal pin set into the terminal base that stops the switch from moving down. I pulled a terminal-base from a busted old hatch button and made the swap.




I used a small screw from an old Delco radio to act as the Pin,



Worked like a charm & fit into the existing hole in the center console perfectly. $40 compared to about $65 for a new Thirdgen Repro. ( Matches the new 82-84 style Repro Power Window buttons too ! )

 

I got mine from a 96 vette, hooked it up to the trunk solenoid.
