1992 firebird speedometer not working properly
At 127,000 miles the firebird speedometer started to work erratically. would work in the neighborhood but jump around on the freeway. Going to work one morning the trans down shifted, I looked down and the speedo said zero MPH. Trans mission shifted back into high gear and speedo was working erratically. then trans down shifted and speedo was dead. Manually shifting through the top gears determined the lockup clutch had disengaged.
Went thru the info posted here on the 91 Camaro. I pulled the speedo cluster and the printed wiring board had the correct 30K ohms. then cleaned the contacts with eraser and then rubbing alcohol. Drove around the block and seemed to be working. but speedo went to zero when got up to speed on freeway. I drove to work a couple of times and trans would not lockup.

Any codes? I'd probably be looking at the VSS in the transmission tailshaft. When they start going bad the speedometer will work intermittently.

Re: 1992 firebird speedometer not working properly
The speedo on my '92 T/A has malfunctioned since I got the car a couple years ago. It seems to be a couple MPH off at low speeds, and then over 50 MPH, the needle has a slight bounce to it. I swapped out the VSS with no change. My next troubleshooting step will be to replace the ECM to see if that has any affect.

This thread has done great information regarding the vss operation with the 730 ecm.

Put a pan under the trans tail piece and one bolt out to remove the VSS. Shined a flashlight into the hole and found the gear had fallen off. Slipped the gear onto the new VSS and used some of the trans drippings to coat the new O-ring. It took longer to jack up and down the firebird than to change out.
And a friend said I should get rid of the firebird because of all of the problems I am having. $59 dollars is cheap. But I had to replace the knock sensor on the engine block recently, as check engine light would intermittently go on and off.
What other sensors can I expect to go out with the firebird at 128,000? miles?

Not do be a wise guy, but probably any of them. You are talking about 25+ year old electronics, beyond their 100k design life. Any could go at any time. Sort of the nature of old cars, I'm afraid.

That is exactly what I want to do but I do not have a list of sensors. What has other members replaced?

Have you checked under the car yet? Could be a simple chaffed or loose wire at the sender.
If those check out, pull out the sender and see if it ate the drive/driven gears or stripped out the center of the driven gear.
That should give you a start without having to randomly buy parts.
***Sorry. Didn't read the whole second post.
Did you check the gear that fell off to see if it's cracked or if the inside is stripped out?
As for the cars reliability, it's a 25 year old car so don't expect it to be perfect. However, if the car has been kept up on, serviced ect, it can be very reliable. The most annoying electrical problems are crappy window motors and hatch pull down. Most everything else is just sensors and they are all pretty simple to replace if they go bad, probably no more complicated than most newer cars, probably easier.
My best advise here would he learn to fix things yourself, which is what it seems you are already doing. Any car can turn into a nightmare money pit if you just pay a shop for fix it Everytime something stops working.
Fwiw I've had my 92 with the same 3.1 for almost 10 years now and aside from upgrading parts I wanted to, I've only "had" to replace the alternator and the battery, both of which were done within the first 2 months of owning it (the alternator didn't even die, the nut came loose for the pulley and trashed the threads). It's been a very reliable and flawless car in all honesty.
