Interior parts cars

I have an 87 Trans Am with the 5 speed manual, one of the major things I'd like to fix on it first is the lack of interior. When I bought it the car had basically no interior below the dash and the headliner was beyond repair due to a roof leak and something living in the car. My main question about the interior when I'm looking for parts cars is what ones will bolt into the 87 manual trans am? I don't mind if the interiors aren't "accurate" so to speak, if an 82 camaro interior works and the dash and center console and center stack can all bolt up and work physically speaking with the car I'll be satisfied. but before I buy a whole nother car to get the interior from I figured I'd come to the experts to see what would fit. For example for the center console, are the manuals and autos compatable with a simple switch of the boot on the shift lever or would I need a manual parts car to have my stick work properly? The camaro and firebird are similar enough that I figure a manual 87 camaro interior would work but what kind of year range should I be looking for to make this as painless as possible? I assume they kept the mounting for interior pieces fairly similar across the 10 year run of the third gens and the location of parts was mostly shifted by changing the brackets on the parts themselves. I'm going to need a new carpet in the front end (likely trunk too unless the new one is the same color), new center console, new center stack where the radio and HVAC controls go and a new dash pad if the one in the parts car isn't cracked. I glossed the forum for a sticky on interior parts compatibility but couldn't really find anything conclusive. I just wanted to be sure of what I should look for before I took the dive and got another car to part out for my current one. Any help is greatly appreciated on this one, I wish I still had the parts the previous owner stripped so I could at least compare them if I went to look at parts cars.

Re: Interior parts cars

The manual uses a different shift plate. A common "mod" is to use a 99-02 center console as you gain cup holders, it doesn't look 100% right but it works (I have one in my car).
The interiors are mostly comparable from 82-92, you will run into some issues as I think some mixed parts from different years as things may interfere with each other. You can even use some Camaro parts in places (seats, carpet, door cards, headliner etc). The center console on camaros have an integrated radio pod, where as firebirds the radio/hvac pod is a separate part. The dash pad on the camaro is different also.
The cluster changes in latter years to an electronic speedometer (Don't recall exact cut over year), also VATS in the latter years changes the wiring some.

Honestly if you are looking for a donor car I would go as new as possible.

Seats from a 4th gen will bolt in, the rear back is slightly narrower but works and few will notice.

With that said even 4th gen cars are quite old at this point, and alot can be had new.
Headliner (hard top ones don't fit right but the T-tops seem to)
speaker covers rear
sun vizors
carpet (for the above look at 1aauto)
Dashpad (OER through several stores, but its expensive there are companies that will recover for a little cheaper)
Door cards (hawks, but they are super simple so you can hand build also)
door sill (the plastic) (OER/Hawks)
weather stripping (1aauto, hawks, rockauto, amazon etc)

Re: Interior parts cars

The Camaro and Firebird interiors were exactly the same from 82-84 and then changes happened in 85, but all of the interior plastics will be the same for the entire 82-92 run. The differences between the two 85 on up will be the; dash pads (firebird pad isn't as deep as the camaro), door panels, arm rests, center console, and seats.

With that being said all parts from 82-92 will fit, but they will not be correct for that exact year.

Re: Interior parts cars

I have a Camaro interior in my 83 T/A. The later model center console is ALMOST the same. The vents won't do anything on a T/A and there was a small amount of cutting at the front to make it fit. You probably don't want any pre-85 center console for your 87 since adding stuff is harder than cutting away extra.

Re: Interior parts cars

Thanks for all the replies guys, there was an 83 V6 auto Camaro for 500 bucks in my area with no drivetrain but a good interior, I was considering picking it up but I'm glad I didn't, I'll have to keep my eye out for something closer to my car for interior parts. The main thing I'll probably need to get separately is a headliner, as my car doesn't have T tops

Re: Interior parts cars

The headline is available in the aftermarket but the hard top doesn't fit well. If you have one at all you can strip cloth off it. Reinforce with fiberglass resin and recover it.
