Hey all, I recently ordered some seatbelt replacements from summit that i thought were going to work for me. In most cases the GTA model isn't included so 99.95% of the time the trans am parts are the same but unfortunately seatbelts weren't one of them. I ordered SafeTBoy STBCFB4D model belts which after reviewing the seat belt listings seem to cover all models from 82-92 with bucket seats. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sao-669906
This new kit only has a retaining buckle on one side and the retraction unit on the other, while the GTA factory belts have 2 retraction units, one on the floor and one on the roof. does anyone have any tips on how to find the right seatbelt set or is my only option using one of these kits and deleting one of the retraction units?
I've not seen new units with dual retractors. 82 model years had a single retractor, in 83 they went to the dual. You can consider having the original ones rebuilt with new webbing, I've done that several times. If you stick with a single retractor style, look for 1982 style sill plates, they are designed with a smaller opening.

Who has these available? I think i might have my factory units rebuilt but in the mean time I guess I'll need to use the 82 style ones i got to get the car inspected.
I had good luck with Safety Restore to rebuild mine. You don't need the 82 sills, it's just a cleaner look vs the dual retractor sill plates that have larger cut outs
Thunder...... I am in NY too.
NEVER seen them even look at the belts.
Are belts required for NY yearly inspection?
Just tires, pull one wheel to eyeball brakes, lights and look inside for the mileage!
We are 95 and under so NO plug in for "emission/systems" check at least.
Some shops will try and nit-pick tires, brakes, and make up a big $$ bill to pass.
Shop carefully........

I was told they check belts and i also see that belts are listed under the nys inspection information online as an inspected/checked item. while they don't mention the straps themselves specifically they do mention making sure the latches/retraction units are in good working order so i just assumed. in this case it'll only take about 15 minutes to put the replacement in for now while I get my originals sent out to replace it. expensive temporary solution but i guess it'll have to work. I'm up in watertown so there aren't as many "cool" shops here. if i was willing to deal with the ticket driving down to syracuse i know a few shops/guys who would take care of it.

I’m in NY and they’ve never checked my seat belts but funny thing about the seat belts is my mechanic who did the inspection said I have 2 open recalls for seat belts…I am tempted to go to the local GM dealer and see what they say.
The dealer(s) have long since used up all the parts for recalls. They started with the button kit, and towards the end (nearly 20 years ago) they were replacing the entire receiver assembly. At this point, it's unrealistic to expect them to replace the parts.
All the aftermarket belts I've seen are single retractor designs. Most have a bracket to mount the old cover to the door sill so there isn't a gaping hole from a missing part.

That is what I assumed would happen, the belts in the car actually look pretty good and work fine.
Those summit belts in the link are for verts and they look more like the 4th gen vert type than 3rd gen. Or maybe they just used whatever pic they have.
I tried to do the belt reciever recall for my 84 15 years ago at dealers in Fla. NC and NY.
Got the same old response......."No parts, recall not valid, or wtf you talking about" !
I just went to the pic a part yard and scored a set of metal recievers and sleeves out
of a Oldsmobile...........
$20 fix.
But as far as inspection.
You should bring it to the little shop near me for NY Insp. near Fulton NY.
I used to have a place in Alex Bay...........

yup.. after i attempted to install them i discovered the retraction unit is designed for vertical install instead of horizontal on the roof like the factory ones. so they are a complete fail, guess i'll have to try getting it inspected as is and then have them rebuilt this winter.
