Steering column or lock cylinder?

For those who have done this, was it easier/ more efficient to swap the whole column, or just the ignition switch?
The original keys to the car are long gone and I'd like to keep the VATS intact. I have a spare column with keys.

My original plan was to pull the lock cylinder, have a blank made and use resistors to find the right chip for my VATS.

Then I thought why not just swap the columns, and then have a blank made off the key i do have, gontheough the resistor process, and then have the right key made for it.

Either way, it's going to involve a couple trips to town and the locksmith, but I really want to be able to say that it will move under its own power instead of being a lawn ornament.

Re: Steering column or lock cylinder?

I had problems with my lock cylinder, high beam switch, and horn contacts, so I ended up just buying a whole column. Surprisingly easy install. I would never trust myself tearing down and working on a steering column, too many things to go wrong, and high potential for resulting safety issues if everything's not done right.

Re: Steering column or lock cylinder?

Just replaced my turn signal switch two weeks ago which involves taking the column down further than the ignition switch. Honestly if you pay attention to what you're doing and take pictures as you go, it's not so bad. It took me about two hours to do it
