I need some advice on repairing the rear hatch interior panel. They are scratched up pretty bad but they seem to have some sort of brittle coating. The underside of the interior panels are fine, but the front side seems to just scratch away and it lighter in colour. I'd assume it has been painted but it still has the texture in the panel, not smooth.
I imagine it would be best to sand all the brittle plastic/material and paint/stain. Is there anyway to get that texture on the plastic so that it looks standard and not weirdly flat/shinny? Or is it better to look for new interior?
Looks like paint. Wipe the plastic down with lacquer thinner to remove it. That will retain the factory texture. Of course you will have to repaint it.
I agree, use thinner to remove the old paint. Try not to get it on the carpet. It may damage it or release the adhesive holding it to the plastic. I have seen a few of these cars where the plastic starts falling a part. Almost like it's dried out. It looses the texture and shape as it's worked with. If that's what's doing on, get new stuff. There are plastic refinishing products from SEM that can make it look new again. I did all the interior plastic w this.
