Finicky Headlights

When i pull the switch, only my running lights come on, then if I switch on the high beams, nothing happens, until I fiddle with the wand and the lights will come on momentarily. I recently removed and cleaned the headlight switch and it looks good. Do i need to replace the high beam switch at the base of the steering column, could it be a wiring problem? My only questions is do the regular headlights depend on the high beam switch? I would've thought that a faulty high beam switch would only effect high beam function and not the whole system. Thanks for the help.

The "high beam switch" isn't only for the high beams, the power for both the high and low beam goes through the switch. This is how it's able to turn off the low beams when it turns on the high beams. The two possibilities here are that the switch could be out of adjustment, which isn't as likely if it's mounting hardware hasn't been touched recently, or that it's contacts are pitted & burnt, which is more likely unless it's been loosened recently...

Ohhh, that makes a lot of sense. I didn't know that the low beams turn off when high beams are on since the high beams have never worked properly. Thanks for the help!

A bit of clarification on Camaros, the outer headlamps have dual filament and the inner are single. When you flip the dimmer switch the outers change from the low output filament to the high output, and the inners are activated as well. At no point should the outers go dark.

Appreciate the clarification, but, if you read my post I did say "This is how it's able to turn off the low beams when it turns on the high beams."

which is exactly what's happening, the low beams are going off when the high beams are going on. Never was it said that the outer lights would go dark
