96 WS6 LT1 with aftermarket cam
im buying my buddys 80xxx mi 96 WS6 trans am lt1 with a cam i think it has a crane cam. but hes giving it to me for 1300$. this is gonna be my first motor swap ever. im just wondering how difficult it is and i do wanna do it myself.
thx
thx
kind of depends on how you are doing the swap. I would make sure you know the specific name of the cam or make sure the pcm(computer) is tuned for that cam.
One thing you might consider is converting it from OBDII to OBDI. OBDI is easier to tune and with a tune with obdi usually yields 10 more hp. All thats needed is an OBDI tuned pcm, 94-95 knock sensor, and remove the 2 extra O2 sensors. They can even tune for the 96 knock sensor so you don't have to replace it. Madz28.com and pcms4less are the two best known LT1 tuners.
Which tranny are you going with? Was the LT1 out of a manual or auto? That info will help determine how hard the swap will be.
Your thirdgen was a V8 Fuel injected car before so that will make it a little easier.
However you do the swap, it really shouldn't be too hard. The LT1 swappers here at thirdgen.org are very familiar with the f-body LT1 swap and can answer about any question you have on this topic.
Here is a good place to do some reading on LT1 swaps: http://www.geocities.com/texaslt1/lt1swap/swap.html

Cali smog. Ouch.
Definitely get a 95 f-body pcm and tell them its a 95 engine when smog testing. Unless you want to hook up 2 cats, 2 extra O2 sensors. Then again, you might already have 2 cats? Ask your local smog tester about 1 cat or 2 cat thing. I dont know if they offered 2 cats as an option in 95.
I think SLP makes headers with air tubes, Hooker might also.
If it was an auto before, maybe consider swapping just engine harnesses with one from a 96(or 94-95,depending on emissions/smog) LT1/T56 car. Hopefully some LT1/T56 swappers will chime in with more information.
You'll need the LT1 a/c compressor and need to retrofit to 134a for the rest of the a/c system.
