V6-LT1

I got a 91 RS V6. How hard is it gonna be for me to swap a LT1 into it? What will be the differences between a 305 or 350 to a LT1 and a V6 to a LT1. I don't have any experience at all, but I've been reading on the forums forever and plan to do it around next april.

It might be better to start off with a V-8 car I think there a few on here who has done it.Off the top of my head I know you will need V-8 motor mounts, tranny, not sure but I think front springs also.

I started off with a 91 bird 3.1v-6 and put a tpi 305 in

dont even worry about the wiring harness off the LT1- go to painless you will thank me later

by some springs or have a nice lowered look

the motor mounts arent that hard

get the trans, exaust, driveshaft and rear end and the computer for sure!!!

this is not going to be a slap it together affair

you will have to stop and read the directions over and over again to make sure that everything is right

when you put wires together do not twist and tape you will have to invest in some sodering equip or a bunch of shrink wrap connectors.

when you have all the wiring the way you want it tie strap it all together and take it to napa

they have conduit. put it on at the store so you dont miss anything.

buy some SFC's because the v-6 car was never twisted on and will not twist if you put those on right away.

buy the helms manual for your car now so you can start to get familiar with the harness that is in your car right now. half of that harness will remain intact

I replaced the 2.8L auto with an LT1 T56 in an '87 Firebird. Whether you start with a V8 or V6 is trivial. The engine mount brackets and front springs you'll need to scrounge will be the least of your problems. I can't think of anything else I would have used if I had started with a V8 car.

do your homework before you even buy one thing. the stock drive shaft and rear end will work with the LT1 swap. saying that, i don't know about the T56, but 700R4, 4L60, and 4L60E will work. the 700R4 only works well with a '93 LT1, due to non-electronic model, but the bellhousing is different from V6 to V8, and make sure it doesn't have a cable driven speedo. you will need full exhaust system as well. as for the wiring harness...my engine had everything connected already...even the ECM. so the wiring is not difficult in my case. also, for me the wiring is the most involved part. you will need a fuel pump too. a lot of people got one for a TPI engine, but i choose a Walbro 255. the radiator and fans may need to be changed too...not quite sure, but i did. of coarse motor mounts, but i've seen V6 springs work on the LT1 and actually it looked higher.

that's the main differences that i can think of between V6 and V8.

I wouldn't worry about it being a V6. Even if you had a V8, you're probably want to get aftermarket springs eventually anyway.

At least its fuel-injected so you don't have to search for and swap the entire hard fuel lines and swap out the fuel sending unit in the gas tank.

Keep reading and planing. Once you make the decision to start, never look back and keep the faith until it is completed.
