Which first? Tranny or Motor?
I am swapping in a Ls1 and t 56 in to My 87 T/A. My question is, should I do the t 56 swap (without the tranny) before I install the motor? Also, should i install the motor and tranny together or is it just as easy to install the motor with bellhousing then the t 56?

I have always installed the clutch and bellhousing to the engine and installed this first and then install the transmission. This has always been the method I found comfortable and it worked best for me. Exception being on an MGA and MGB, there I put them together and installed as a unit because the MG has no separate bellhousing.

Its a VERY tight fit to drop an LS1/trans combo into the engine bay from above when bolted together. Its doable as this is what i did but it was a pain in the ars. You have to remove your wiper motor and your ac/heater box as well as all the other obvious stuff; rad, hoses etc.
If you can its easiest to remove the k member and notch it ( if thats what your doing vs aftermarket tubular ) and lower the car onto the k mem after the engine and trans have been bolted up.
