'98 Gas Tank Swap, anyone done it?

I picked up a '98 tank with a walbro pump for a good deal, but now that I'm searching for old threads on the 4th gen tank swap, it seems like everyone is doing 99+ . If you've done this swap or know someone who has, how involved was the project and any special parts I should order before I start?

I'm gunna take the lack of responses as a bad sign. I don't see using the 98 as being a problem though...only difference is they are metal and use a return line, which might not be so bad seeing as how it could be sumped...hmmm. If anyone's got info, post it up. If no one posts I'll update this thread with anything I find out.

Youre gonna find a lot of info on LS1tech.com about sumped 98' tanks. Most of us swap for 99+ cause they are plastic and look brand new even after 8 years. 99+ also use the updated fuel pump/bucket. 98' should be a direct bolt on.

How is it a direct bolt in? The filler tubes are different lengths.

The filler neck being the only thing that has to change I would call it bolt in as well. I used a '99 tank on mine.

The reason why the '99+ tanks are more desirable because with the plastic tank (also doesn't rust) the filler nect is a spearate rubber piece which is easy to trim to the shorter length needed in the third gen cars.

The '98 tanks are metal requiring hacksawing, etc and potentially getting metal fragments into your tank.

Plus, the removable rubber neck makes installation/ removal that much easier.

I hope this helps.
