how do you know if the distrubuters on lt1s are going out?

I have a buddy with an LT1 vette, when his started going out it began missing alot. Poor design really, I've read the MSD opti is the bomb. I saw this opti coil conversion that looks kind of neat;

Usually you will begin having missing problems at mid-high rpms, then it will start to happen at lower rpms, and get worse.
