Re: LS3 Engine Swap

NICE work man!!! Great numbers out of what is probably a really nice car to drive around!

That exhaust is fantastic. Ide really love to redo mine with some cats like you have done. But Ide need to go to a tracpack torque arm mount, and probably one of hawks trans crossmembers too...like you have. That really seems to provide the most room for exhaust out of all the combos.

How about some vids of that puppy on the move???

Good stuff!

Thanks Justin... Hope you guys who have had some recent troubles can get your cars back running again soon... You and Nick have some nice 3rd gens that you hate to see idle while the weather is good!

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Took the Iroc to the local track today... Lucky Drag City about 10 miles or so from my house. It is one of the oldest continuous operation tracks in the country so they say...

Anyways this was the first trip for me to the track with this car as well as the first pass at a track i have ever made... it was great fun, i should have been doing this sooner!

I think i had a good day considering a couple key things-
- First time out for me and my IROC at a track, so got some basic learning done as well as working up pretty quick on not missing shifts and hitting the rev limiter!
- Definitely need to add some more rubber in the back... the 245 MT Drag Radials on my standard IROC rims were tough to get any decent no spin launch
- Need to get my line lock working.
- Made about a dozen passes with a lot of learning

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Now the things that made it really fun
- Repeatedly smoked a guy in his '08 Mustang with a Ford Racing Roush supercharger... He would beat me off the line as i need to get my spin under control, but i would run him down easily all 3 times we raced and by the 1/8th mile it was like i passed him like he was standing still... After the 3rd time he drove out the gate and left!
- No problem smoking a slightly modified 2010 Camaro SS (cold intake kit, etc)... i don't even know how far back he was by the 1/8th mile
- The new mustang and camaro give them a pretty good launch with their traction control system and while i definitely want to get my launch down as i think i can improve my time still quite a bit, it was fun to be a little behind at the start and watch there faces as i ran them down and passed them each time by the 1/8th!
- My best run was 12.308 sec @ 120.29 MPH at 1/4 mile... I think i can do quite a bit if i improve my launch... i am real happy though with the first time through and also my ending trap speed. Also other than a couple runs at the start where i missed my shift, etc... i was pretty consistent in this performance

I wish i had brought my video... you could tell the Mustang owner was kinda upset lets just say, but gives him something to work towards trying to beat a 3rd gen!

In general it was a lot of positive response in looking at a 3rd gen with this set-up when i had it parked with the hood up... I think our LSX motor conversions are going to give us some good respect in the years to come...

with a properly setup car, that mph is good for 11.1x's or better. for reference, my car has been 11.2x's at 122mph, and i made that pass with a powerglide when i should have been using a th400.

Bravo!...for your first time to the track you can be real proud of those numbers. There was a time when 13s were big block only territory. With practice and learning from each run 11s should be in the near future.

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Thanks guys, appreciate the input... it would be nice to break into the 11's... gives me something to shoot for.

As i have mentioned in my previous posts, i use HP Tuners to modify my ECM file. One of the other benefits though is that you can do detail scans of your operation and i did a lot of logging going down the track yesterday.

I did a couple of screen shots so you guys can see what type of stuff you can log with this tool, if anyone has hp tuners and would like to see the complete scan files i can load them, but i thought it would be nice to just do a couple of screen shots to give everyone an idea of what you can do...

It is a really nice tool and they give great technical support. With the tune editor you can pretty much do whatever you want so you need to use some common sense, but it is fun being able to adjust your parameters to get your idle how you like, etc... a great feature of the editor is that you can do a compare of two files so you can see what others have done to give some learning

anyways the two screen shots show a couple of my passes at the track yesterday... you can see from my first gear performance i can use some more practice and stickier tires, but the thing really pulls as i get into 2nd and beyond... also as you can see no Power Shifting at this point!

the second screenshot also is from my best pass of the day at the 12.3 secs where i was up against the 2010 Camaro SS

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

After bruce got his TVS2300 mounted in that pontiac formula and reading about it in GM High Tech Performance i figured i better get on the stick as i have had this supercharger since last year

The hood is from bruce and is the Sunoco style, we thought this one will give the necessary clearance and still have a nice look. The hood's interior is set up for a carb and actually it is sitting on my existing Fast 102 intake, so that definately needs all carved out

This should be an interesting project and hoping to get some good numbers next summer with it

My plan is to get this done so that as soon as it gets nice again this spring i can get the car painted with the new hood. I am thinking about having the 92 type heritage rally stripes in red painted on top of the black

For rear tires i am going to send my 16" irocs and have them widened by 1.5" to 9.5" so i can mount a 305

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

thanks, yes i already have the TVS2300 sitting on my bench so it is pretty much up to me and my good friend Rich to get it done over the winter.

actually i think the TVS2300 install should not be too bad compared to what has already been done getting to this point... famous last words, but having gone through the instructions and the kit they sent (i bought a complete LS3 corvette tvs2300 set-up), i think while there will be still some things to work out it shouldn't be that bad

probably a significant amount will be getting the hood exactly right, etc so i can get ready for paint.

i am sure on the tuning i will be in for some work to get it right

Sweet winter garage time you´re headin for. It´s gonna become one seriousley fast Camaro untill next spring. God luck with the work during this winter, I can´t hardly wait to see/read what it can do with the TVS2300 up and running with a good tune to it.
Someday I´d like to get my hands on one of them too for my LS2/T56 Iroc, but I got enough expenses with the swap as it is now already;-)

Two good choices, The Sunoco hood is the best looking aftermarket hood out there, and the TVS 2300 is also the best SC out there as well. Bravo!!!

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Ok, my friend rich and I got going on the project again today since we had the day off from work and need to get moving so we are ready for paint in the spring.

Started off with doing some basic trim on the interior of the Sunoco hood to make the required clearance since the interior piece was originally laid out for a carb motor

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

With the interior piece cut out the hood has quite a bit of clearance... hopefully enough for the TVS2300 once we get it mounted!

We will do some finish work on the interior of the hood once we get it confirmed that it fits well with this rough cut.

Also FYI, the tool we used for this an some of the other cutting work today was the new Eastwood cut off tool that i got recently, it works great as it gives you a nice radiak type of cut off tool that is easy to use with variable speed control

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

After doing the rough cut-out work on the interior of the hood we moved on to get started on the TVS2300 install

First thing is to get some basic disassembly done.

Besides the basic top-end removal, there are some changes to the accessory drive package to accommodate the needs of the super charger, including a much heavier tensioner and belt layout

Note that earlier last year with the upgrades done last winter, we have already installed a heavy duty ATI 8 rib belt dampener that is pinned to the crank so that will be re-used

Once the intake is off, the valley cover needs to be removed as the TVS2300 uses a different arrangement that is provided with the kit... this also allows for a quick basic look at some of the cam lobes that showed no wear from last years use

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

The majority of our time today involved getting the new tensioner arrangement mounted...

This arrangement requires some modification to the existing LS3 style water pump to allow for full travel of the new tensioner and no interference with the belt arrangement.

Two bosses need to be removed as well as providing some additional clearance underneath the top water pump inlet

To do this a number of tools needed to be utilized including the new Eastwood radiak, a couple of different reciprocating saws with metal cutting blades, die grinder with sanding disc and hand files...

we had the shop vac going by the cutting tool being used while doing the cutting which worked well to avoid through junk all over

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

After this operation was done we were able to mount the new heavy duty tensioner, it will swing down all the way into the area where those bosses were removed from the water pump

Also the bracket that will relocate the power steering reservoir has been installed behind the new tensioner (the reservoir is still mounted in its original location right now in the photo)

Also the front steam tube assembly changes with the outlet being on the opposite side vs stock

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Making some progress over the past couple weekends...

After looking at the belt layout and reading again all the way through the instructions, we realized that the top radiator hose and the power steering reservoir line were going to be within the belt, ie the belt would have to be inserted with those removed so they could then pass through after the belt was on

we did not like that arrangement as even though the belt should last a long time, needing to remove the radiator hose and power steering hose to service the belt did not seem to be optimal... i am sure magnason ended up doing it this way to cut down on the mod and its expense but we wanted to do better

so first up was to tackle the water pump... the solution was to go with a pump that moved the upper radiator outlet back to the passenger side of the pump pully... an ls2 style pump fits the bill it seems so that is what we installed... not that the lower water neck from the ls3 pump is slightly different in the bolt hole arrangement!!! a slight drill out solves this, seems kind of stupid though why that would be the case, but anyways it was an easy fix

haven't mounted everything back up yet with the new tensioner but looks like this pump will do the job with no mod's

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

next up was dealing with the power steering reservoir feed line to the pump

we decided the best way to deal with this was to run the line behind the belt

this required a hole to be drilled in the alt mounting bracket... i got a nice plastic protector for the hole from mcmaster-carr (note in this pic, the original water pump is still mounted)

this allows the line to go direct from the reservoir below the throttle body and directly to the pump, no pass through of the belt!

to do this it was also optimal to rotate the reservoir 90 degrees... to accomplish this we took the bracket from the magnason kit and the original vette mounting bracket cut them apart and merged them together to make a nice strong bracket that once tig'd and finished will look good as well

on the new bracket, the reservoir mount tab is from the vette piece and the mount to the engine is from the magnasun piece

Re: LS3 Engine Swap w/TVS2300 Supercharger

that allowed us to then get to mounting the supercharger in place

it went pretty easy and has plenty of space it appears... also set the new hood back on and looks like we will have good clearance

the biggest challenge was torquing a couple of the hold down bolts... we ground down a 10mm 1/4 inch drive socket to be able to get to the 4th bolt back on the passenger side as access is tight as that is where the back supercharger belt mounting is

next up is final finishing the bracket up for the power steering reservoir and getting all the tensioner remounted and verifying belt, etc... still have the intake to do and the intercooler, along with the wiring, etc... plenty to do but looks like we are on the right path

also we rotated the throttle body 90 degrees as this lowers its height having the motor drive on the driver's side

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Thanks guys for the comments...

We made some good progress over the last weekend working on a number of things including

- new air duct arrangement...

this looks like it will actually work out pretty easy and the good news is the new hood has good clearance it appears now for the supercharger and also this air inlet arrangement

air inlet is made out of 4" silicone 90 deg with some 4" alum tube going to the k&n filter i had been using... i need to weld on a new MAF boss but the pic show the general arrangement

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

also working on the intercooler arrangement

to mount the intercooler reservoir, we decided to mount it to the ps reservoir bracket... so this got some additional welding to add the mounting piece, but i think it turned out well and should look good after paint.

the intercooler itself is a little bit of a challenge... instead of using the one in the kit i am contacting Be Cool and see if i can get a custom one made that will mount in exactly the same place as where the ac condensor use to mount...

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Man Alan... This is turning out great. Good work making the belt do what YOU want it to do. I agree having to pop hoses off to change/install the belt is a tad silly. For the little bit of extra work $$ you had to put into it, what youve done is 100x better.

I cant wait to hear how you like that new set up. I took a ride in a an older monte carlo with an LS1 and TVS2300 combo...and it was FUUUNNNNNN....to say the very least.

Def something I would love to do...but Ide just settle for my car running again at this point haha. Good luck getting her buttoned up! Ill just live vicariously through you for now!

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

That exaust set-up is so trick, and it is the one I want to do, but Hawks slashes your throat on their swap headers and that complete system, If you don't mind me asking, how much was that whole system, including the headers?

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Been following this thread for a while now, looks like an awesome combo.

What would you say is the clearance issue with the blower? Pulley, housing or Throttle body, or a combo of all of them? I would love to be able to run something like that under a stock hood but I dont want to run anything other than either a stock flat hood or a power bulge...

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

here are some pics of the belt drive system once we finished the changes associated with using the water pump with the upper neck on the passenger side (older LS2/LS3 style) and then also the mod for the power steering hose routing

this is using the ATI 8 rib set-up that we put on from last year... the pulleys on the TVS2300 were changed on both the drive and idler to support the 8 rib versus the standard kit's 6 rib

the 3rd pic also shows how the bracket turned out for mounting the new intercooler resevoir and power steering in addition to the belt routing on the passenger side

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

this past weekend, i was very busy working on various brackets

- bracket for holding the air intake and also providing a nice heat shield between the engine bay and the air filter

- bracket for mounting the tvs intercooler pump

- bracket for mounting the new RX Performance oil catch can

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

here is how i ended up mounting the tvs intercooler pump, the clamp that mounts the pump to the bracket is the standard clamp used to hold the fuel filter...

this makes for a nice arrangement with the output from the intercooler resevoir going to the pump and then output of the pump will go to the new intercooler radiator

here are the pics of how the air inlet mounting shield works out... i used some grip edge that i got from Mcmaster Carr to make a nice finish on the top of the shield that the air inlet sets on

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

here is the arrangement for the RX Performance Oil Catch Can... there was a convenient mounting point available on the driver's side wheel well area that was already pre-dimpled for a mounting point that i utilized

also you can see the breather in the last picture that is used in place of the oil fill cap

the lines to the catch can will run from the drivers side valve cover port to the catch can and then from the catch can to the supercharger inlet port

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Been making some good progress over the past couple of weeks.

With the new TVS2300 mounted the injectors and fuel rails sit closer to the traditional mounting arrangement of the coil packs.

My friend Rich who is working with me on this noticed that in the GMPP catalog the LSA / LS9 engines utilize a different valve cover that sits the coils lower by direct mount to the cover.

The LSA cover is a better fit for the IROC as the oil fill and breather locations work with the layout. I got these covers and am going with them

The only tight spot is the front drivers side coil as to get the lower bottom coil bolt on and torqued you need to remove the alternator out of the way, but it fits and ends up working out good

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Here are a couple pics of the TVS2300 intercooler heat exchanger that i had made (on right) versus the one sent by magnason in the kit (on left)... as you can see i will have a lot more cooling capability

I had the custom one made to fit in place of the existing air conditioning condensor that allows the hose routing to work out similar to how the condensor lines came around the engine radiator on the passenger side

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

here are a couple of pics with the new heat exchanger mounted in place

it pretty much went in without an issue, re-used the stock rubber isolator pads as noted below.

as the water tank housings on the end needed to be a little thicker to accommodate the standard tank griffin had (1 3/4") i needed to have it push a little forward compared to the stock condensor... we did this by cutting about a 1/2" off the original top rubber isolator blocks that we re-used

also put a couple of thin rubber strips between the two side edges between the engine rad and heat exchanger so it was tight and would not fret / rattle

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

here are a couple of pics of where i am at... getting close

i have been working on finishing up the wiring which is pretty minimal changes - new IAT in the supercharger vs MAF sensor, intercooler pump, throttle body motor relocate to drivers side, etc

also have been doing a lot this week to make the first initial custom tune file a couple of the critical things that you want done before key on first time include
- adjust for new zr1 injectors, both base flow and compensation
- increase PE enrichment rate to ward off knock
- timing maps must be changed
- i also adjusted a lot of the idle characteristics of adaptive idle and spark

need to fill the coolant back up in the engine rad and new intercooler... i got a new vacuum fill tool, we will see how that works!

so today i hope to get it fired up, we will see!
