NJ Inspection with an LSX swap

What are you guys doing about inspecting your car after the swap? How do they determine which emissions test the car does? I have heard it's by the year of the engine.. from old to 95 get the sniffer, 96 to 04? get the diagnosic check, and then the newer cars are on the treadmill. Is this true?

Also, how is the type of test determined? Is it done by block ID or PCM?

My car is an 89, the engine a 99. I have a PCM but I can't get any info on it from the numbers that are on there. I think that HPTuners can tell me what it is, but I have yet to purchase it.

I've taken mine thru the Randolph inspection station twice since the swap, didn't mention the powertrain and they just inspected it same as always. Mirror under the car to verify cats were present, put it on the treadmill and spun the tires, etc.

I'd say just do the same, roll up and hand the guy your paperwork.

Well that is a little hope for me.

What do you mean papers? Are there engine swap papers that I don't know about?

The papers are the vehicle registration, proof of insurance card, driver's license, and that little ticket the entry gate prints you.

No engine swap papers (yet) in NJ DMV to my knowledge.

Re: NJ Inspection with an LSX swap

The ususal stuff.. I figured that is what you were refering to. It would not supprise me if they had some stupid document about engine swaps to fill out.

I assume you went from a 5.7 TPI to the 5.7 LS1. I wonder if they will question me since I am going from 5.0 to 5.7. I will certainly go through without saying anything.

They failed my slightly modified Talon recently so I would like all my ducks in a row. The supervisor and I didn't see eye to eye on my "loud and modified exhaust". I am expecting a huge fight when I go in with my bird.

Thanks for the help.

I went from a 5.0L to the LS1 also. They don't have a cylinder displacement whistler so it's unlikely they would determine a change in engine volume.

They don't ask, I don't volunteer information.
