a couple 5.3 swap ?'s for guys running a carb
hey guys, i might be buying a 70,000 mile 5.3l long block for a decent price and have a couple questions.
first, i plan on running a carb on it and would like to know how you wired in the alternator? did you just splice into the car wiring or did you have to run new wires and a resistor?
second, are any of you running the serpentine system without the a/c compressor and power steering pump? i have not decided on whether or not i'm going to keep the power steering yet. the car will not be daily driven.
thanks guys

Although, I guess you never said you were going to use the truck system.

You splice the LS1 1 wire alternator connector to the brown wire that goes to your stock alternator. I've heard of some people wiring a 500 ohm resistor in, but I think it will work without it. The red wire on your stock connector will not be used. Other than that, just run a wire from the battery to the alternator. Check this thread out.
It's really easy not to run A/C; the A/C compressor has it's own belt, so all you have to do is remove the compressor and idler pulleys. The power steering will be more difficult to delete. I know someone makes an aftermarket power steering delete bracket, but can't remember who. You're better off keeping power steering. The stock power steering lines will hook into the LS1 power steering pump.
You should use the 98-02 Fbody accessories. They're the cheapest and easiest to find, and they fit our cars really well.
Off topic, but don't forget you have to change the oil pan to a 4th gen Fbody one as well. The truck oil pan will hang about 2" below the k-member. Not good.

thanks guys,
i didn't know about the alternator possibly being mounted to high. the victor intake and carb with filter would be to high for the stock hood anyway i believe.
i didn't even see that alternator thread when i was searching thanks for putting up the link. i probably will keep the power steering as the motor is coming with the pump. i did find while searching that i would have to change the pan which is not a big deal. thanks again
