LT1 swap into a 86' lroc
LT1 swap into a 86' lroc
Hey, l am picking up an 86' lroc in the morning that needs the stock motor rebuilt.
I have a friend who is selling a 94' z28 with the 5.7 motor,auto trans.
Both run great..it's just been wrecked and is junk now the most part.
I can get the motor tranny for $800, to me.
How hard is it to swap in a LT1 into my 86 lroc?
Is it a straight swap?
Will l need to rewire?
The Lt1 is complete..everything is there, all the wiring and everything.

Re: LT1 swap into a 86' lroc
Its a very simple swap, it will make u check wiring diagrams over and over and over but is simple. I did mine in a couple days (rewiring it all).
I took a 97 harness (obd 2) and converted it bc I run obd1. I basically took the harness and cut back anything I do not use like...
-rear O2s
-crank posisiton
-evap
-egr
-ac
-smog
blah blah.
Then there is 3 plugs on the lt1 harness that connect in the car for the fuse box. I cut down whichever i didnt use and wired the rest to a fuse panel such as..
I wired the injectors seprate(each bank) to a 7.5A fuse
I wired the maf, O2s etc to a 15A fuse.
I wired the PCM fuse on its own 10A i think.(either that or 15)
I wired ignition to its own 10A i think(either that or 15)
Then on the connectors that I cut off for the stock lt1 harness I connected to the C100 bulkhead (stock engine harness)
The only ones u need to tap into are ones like gauges.(which i didnt use since I have all autometers)
Also u need to run the 3 red wires to the starter and the purple one to the starter ALSO you need to run the wire off the alternator to one of the red wires (cant remember)
There are many write ups.
I would deffinitly do the complete swap for anyone if they wanted to send me both harness' and some cash.
For the motor swap it is a direct drop in BUT you will need to get an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator (or the stock lt1)
Also remember that an LT1 used reverse cooling (through the heads first) so there is a line that has to go to the rad then to the heads.
It sounds all confusing but the average DIYer can do it.
Any questions PM me and ill give u input.

Re: LT1 swap into a 86' lroc
Okay that doesnt sound tooo difficult since I'm gonna have the help of someone that has done this before.
I'm a learning 19 yr old, l can do alot..but I have never done a swap like this..so it should be intresting.
I'll repost any question l have along the way, and if you think of any tricks that will save me trouble..please do post
Thanks!

Re: LT1 swap into a 86' lroc
Is your 86 IROC a carb car or fuel injected car??? When I did mine I didnt realize that the 5.0 HO carb engine I was taking out didnt need the use of a pump in the fuel tank, so after I realized that there was no in tank fuel pump, i had to drop the tank, intalled a walbro, and a new fuel sending unit out of an 89 Z. You may want to put an aftermarke pump, and newer sending unit on your Z anywase but just check everything to make sure.
