how do i pull codes from my 94 f-body lt1?

title says it,do i need a code reader or can i check for codes on a lt1 like you check tpi codes?thanks in advance.

tried the paperclip between pins a & b on aldl,it turned the coolant fans on but the light wouldnt blink,any ideas?
