Is a lower shift boot really necessary?

I kind of forgot to order one, was going to buy one from an LT1 or LS1 car and hopefully it would fit right, but alas I forgot to get it. So now here I am, getting ready to drop the motor and trans in on Saturday and even if I buy one online it probably won't be here by Saturday.

So is it absolutely necessary to have a stock-ish looking rubber boot? Or can you make something that will do the job just as well? What have some of you guys made to use as a lower boot? I'm thinking the hole that I cut wouldn't fit well with a stock GM boot anyways, it's not a perfect looking hole. Has anyone tried to rig up something that worked well for them?

Re: Is a lower shift boot really necessary?

the T56 puts out a lot of heat, and not having that rubber boot makes the shifter really toasty... and the car drafty and noisey

I have one from a 4th gen car.... $10 plus shipping if you want it

Re: Is a lower shift boot really necessary?

From what I've read, it does a fair bit to block noise & fumes from entering the car, so you'll probably want something there. Is there any way to work around it for a few days?? Maybe concentrate on other areas of the swap?

I didn't have one. I plan on getting one.

I've been riding without it for several months now... but it's definitely something you'll want to have in there. The amount of heat that comes through there is insane.

"Need" is a relative term. You dont need it but you probably really REALY want it. I just put mine on from the bottom side up and sealed it in with seam sealer. Fast, clean, best of all really easy install.

Re: Is a lower shift boot really necessary?

I am getting one from JayZ28 and going to install it from inside the car like on the 4th gens, I'll probably have to rig up another piece of rubber to completely seal the hole because I think I cut the hole too big, but I'll figure something out.

Re: Is a lower shift boot really necessary?

Unless you cut the hole HUGE, the GM one should work fine. I actually just went to Schucks and grabbed one of those universal spectre rubber puts with a metal retainer ring and bend each side to fit. It was supposed to be a temp fix but ran like that for a good 3 years before I finally ordered up a GM one. Which still didn't fit the floorpan perfectly...

Sorry to hijack the thread, but with a stock third-gen T5 lower boot work with a T56?

Re: Is a lower shift boot really necessary?

It does but just barely. You end up stretching it pretty close to the limit but it fits. I'd like to replace mine with the T-56 piece one of these days.

Think this one would be fairly close? Its from the c3 corvette, there's a whole bunch of them for sale on ebay.. I was looking for a t56 shift boot too and can't find one anywhere.

Good call since it's not an overly critical part that must come from a camaro. I'm sure the vette one will work great.
