Re: So here I was on my way to the bowling alley when all of a sudden...

Yeah I'm pretty excited but a little spooked at the same time. Its an Escalade L92 with the VVT which is the main reason I went this route. I've been mulling numerous ideas on how to make more power yet retain completely civil street manners and basically came up with two trains of thought; 1. add boost which was what i was leaning towards initially or...2. Add cubes and stay N/A which really made more appeal for me as I love all the reliability and overall impact to have a N/A fast car always makes me feel prouder then adding a cheat with boost or spray so to speak.

So considering my situation and the countless hrs of research I started delving deeper into the mystery of VVT and realized that i may just be able to have my cake and eat it too. There sure is a lot of trial and error to go through as I'm going to tune this myself but seeing as I still aim for a street driven car this made more sense to me rather than adding a power adder. In Canada its not legal to have a roll bar/cage on a street driven car. So building a boosted low 10 second bullet for my purposes of street use dont have a ton of appeal to me right now I'll save that for a track only build probably next time around or on another car altogether. Even though some areas are lax and the cops might not charge you the insurance act here has an annual binding agreement with the gov't on what they cover... and what the dont cover. Roll cage cars cannot be legally road insured anymore as my research seemed to find its a lot more dangerous to suffer head injuries in an otherwise mild accident whilst driving a car with a cage and not wearing a helmet hence this ruling.

So back to boost... If I boost my LS1 its practically a no brainer to make at least 550 to the wheels and limits upwards of 800 plus rwhp or more when going to the extreme. A local friend of mine is now running 9.04 on a boosted 408 forged LS1 with a Novi on meth making just under 1000 rwhp. This car is nothing short of insane and although its technically still a street legal car driving this thing around is again nothing short of insane.

So I figured it like this; If i build one of these VVT set ups and shoot for the most torque under the curve and I do all the supporting mods it'll probably knock a second off my 12.0 LS1 build now and maybe touch a high 10 on a perfect pass. PLUS it should get at least the same kind of gas mileage and retain all its very nice driveability that I truly love about this car and LS1 engines in particular. Then it was just a matter of finding an engine and here we are.

Only thing I'm really not looking forward to as of now is doing up another harness. Although its not particularly difficult IMO. It sure is time consuming to do a very neat and factory quality job of it. I have to add DBW now and more wiring with the VVT stuff and whatnot so I do have some work cut out in front of me.

I sold off my entire engine, harness and tune locally for a sweet heart of a deal but to someone who above all deserves it... My nephew LOL. I hired him when he was 14 to work for me during the two years it took me to do the first LS1 swap so he has about as much intellectual ownership over that engine as I do anyways so its the right thing to do.

Anyways thats that I'll post more about it as I go. Anyone wanna see a build thread?

All right, another VVT thirdgen (& an L92 to boot)!!! I'm pretty sure that you won't have any problems making it all fit together, but on the off-chance that you do, feel free to fire a PM my way. You could also check out my build thread on 'Tech, I've tried to be reasonably detailed about the VVT-specific things that I've run into... It's really great that someone else has looked into the added power potential that VVT offers, & decided to take advantage of it - I'm hoping to get a Mast Motorsports VVT camshaft & tune within a couple years after the car's done. Something tells me that I could get really used to having 475 naturally-aspirated horsepower in the GTA...

And yeah, definitely post up a build thread, I'd like to see this bad boy come together! (Probably a hell of a lot more quickly than mine...!)

Re: So here I was on my way to the bowling alley when all of a sudden...

Yeah exactly VVT has far more power making potential under the curve than any static cam grind. You literally get the best of both worlds you can tune the cam advance/retard throughout the entire RPM range and MAST dyno results show 70hp gain cam only swap with NO LOSS of low RPM torque and this is only because of the cam phasing that this is possible.

In short: Big Block quality torque at 2000 RPM along with 7000RPM Ls1 style SCREEEEEEEEEAMING big power on the top end and torque torque torque!! all the way there.

Me thinks once more info and actual real world power results become more public that VVT will start to look like a must have instead of a whats that?

I have seen threads where Corvette LS3 guys are looking to add VVT to their LS3's and Patrick G quote from LS1tech says it all....

Ditching VVT on a 6.2L is like ditching fuel injection and going back to a carburetor.
