please help! 2003 corvette ls1 into a 90 rs
Help!!!
I'm getting a 2003 ls1 out of a corvette with under 30,000 miles on it. it was rolled. the seller is claiming that the engine is still stock internally, he did not open it and good. with new intake manifold and throttle body with 24# injectors. minus oil pan and accessories, with the exception of the water pump. will include engine, water pump, coil packs, wiring harness and pcm. drive by cable throttle since it's a drive by wire stock.
I am a total newbie to ls engines!!
I want to keep my 700r that will be rebuilt, help with that as well if you can.
i want to keep power steering, and my stock a/c??? I 'm not getting the interior dash so I don't know if it's better to get a 4th gen or i can make this work and look stock? please any and all help appreciated, i know i have to upgrade my fuel delivery system as well but don't know the best route? adapter for the tranny? k member needed? btw, all steering components on my 90 rs are new.

also forgot to mention, engine is going to cost me $1900 so I'm trying to spend hopefully as little as possible for everything else maybe a $1000 budget? hopefully less.

i dont think you can use the drive by wire TB with a 700r4. The DBW throttle body won't have a place to hook up the TV cable. Stock k-member will work but you'll need to notch it to use A/C.
Re: please help! 2003 corvette ls1 into a 90 rs
I remember a thread on LS1tech about a guy who used a TH400 with DBW and retained kickdown. The cable was mounted to the pedal and operated in the same manner as one mounted to the TB. Pretty ingenious. I wouldnt count out a 700R4 just because its DBW
$1000 budget is too small, and $1900 for a LS1 long block is too high. Generally you can get the engine/trans combo for that from a Fbody

TH400 uses an electric kickdown instead of a cable like the TH350, if it were me, I would put the 4L60E behind it, you can find one for what you would end up have in rebuilding the 700 you have.

This is correct. 700r4 wont work correctly, or last very long without a properly working TV cable. It controls line pressure. I would find a 4L60E, as Klortho stated. It's an electronic controled, and updated version of the 700r4. Dean

Re: please help! 2003 corvette ls1 into a 90 rs
thank you guys for your imput!
about the tranny I prob. will have to trade up, I was hoping to keep it since I have a guy to do the rebuild really cheap. 1900 is high but i liked it since it came out of a corvette-aluminum block, and carfax i got today showed 12,000 miles on it. it was a movie car that got rolled in the last scene. i was just hoping for a 1000 budget, but it's more like 2000.
any other tricks or shortcuts that might benefit me?

Re: please help! 2003 corvette ls1 into a 90 rs
Corvettes and Fbodys got the same LS1, year to year. There were a few differences but nothing worth the vette tax
Tip on shortcuts, dont take them. Do it right or do it twice
I would highly recommend replacing the oil pump before putting the engine in too

i guess i didn't make it clear. I'm using the drive by cable not by wire. either way, I am looking for a 4L60E instead of rebuilding my 700r.

Re: please help! 2003 corvette ls1 into a 90 rs
ok so i have:
-2003 vette ls1 no accesories execpt water pump.
-new intake/ throttlebody/ fuel rails
-coil pacs
-24# injectors
-wiring harness/pcm
-stock exaust manifolds/headers
-found a guy that claims to have a 4l60e out of a special edition ws6? borg wagner edition? with only 800 miles on it, car was wrecked new. any imput?
still need new driveshaft, and prob. new rear end. hopefully I can find a cheap posi. or just keep the freeway gears for better fuel milage.

None of the low production 4th gens had any different trans than the rest
Your stock DS will work fine, or use a 4th gen piece. 84-02 interchange freely

Re: please help! 2003 corvette ls1 into a 90 rs
thanks! I'l prob just use a posi or rebuild the stock diff to keep fuel economy a lil higher. less fun but helps out in the wallet wouldn't it? I also have all the sensors(forgot to mention that) to the engine. how can I keep/make this smog legal in california???? I would really love that instead of paying the 150-200 every two years.

There have been a couple smog legal California swaps here on thirdgen.org - use the search, it will definitely help.

Re: please help! 2003 corvette ls1 into a 90 rs
There is a conversion that has been shown on here. The problem with the 'vette engine is the accessories are mounted 3/4" closer to the engine. Space in our cars becomes limited. That 3/4" puts everything back into the engine, or the suspension.... The conversion you were asking about was surely made for the F car engine only, as there seems to be not enough room to put the compressor there with the C5 setup. The back of the compressor on the C5 version, wants to be in the same space as the front of the right side A arm. Guess who gets first dibs? ;-)
