Swaping from regular 350 to Lt1 350

Ok. I have gone over the threads but 8 pages is a lot. And I realy didnt see what I am looking for. So I will ask it here. I would like to put an LT1 in my 82 camaro. I found a few in the dallas area. I have been told that these engines are bullet proof (well almost). The one I found has the harness and computer,(yes the computer is with it) But the harness was unpluged at the fire wall in the engine compartment. In order to make it work do I need to get all of it from inside the car? I am going to use the early model 700r4 in my car now. The one thing I see on the trans is that it doesnt have a speedo gear but it does have a plug, I assume that is for a speed sensor for the speedo. I am going to have it changed to a gear drive for a regular speedo cable. Beleve me when I say it shfited fine with the now locked up 350 that is in the car now. So the trans is not an issue. What if anything should I make damn sure I get if I go to get this engine? The ones I am looking at are complete engines (all sensors included). So, whats next.

make sure you check the torque converter. what caused the engine to lock? if the car was moving when the engine locked it could have damaged the converter. also make sure you fab brackets for the tv cable and get the geometry correct.

Yes it was moving when it locked. The cause is unknown, But There was a knocking noise(like a rod, maybe piston) when it locked up. I tried to crank it, but the starter didnt like that one bit. And please tell me what is TV cable?

Re: Swaping from regular 350 to LS1 350

the tv cable controls fluid pressure in the transmission. it connects to the engine throttle. the LT1 engine used a 4L60E which is completely electronically controlled so the brackets to hold and connect the cable to the engine will have to be fabbed or bought. i've never done this swap so i couldn't tell you much about it. the geometry of the cable and bracket is critical for the transmission to work properly.

Thats good to know. But I am going to use the 700r4. So I shouldnt need the TV cable and things.Right?

Wrong. The above poster is correct. You are opening a box of worms with all the intermixing. It is late and with so many issues you will have to cover I'm getting a headache thinking about it.

yeah, i think you are confused. you have LS1 in the title and LT1 in your post also. and maybe you're not sure what transmission you have.

Sorry about the headache. I have looked over most of this site. To many people saying to many different things. I see some saying you can use the700r4 and others say cant. I am still looking for a straight answer. Can I just use the under hood harness or do I need all of it? I am still going over this site to try and find answers. So far it looks like a wast of time to go the LT1 route. I can deal with transmission issues at a later date if I have to. That is if I can get an answer. Like why would I need to use the 460le transmission?
Does the engine make the differece? What is it? I just dont see the engine pcm running the tranny. Doesnt it have it's own computer? Thease are the things I need to know if I am going to use my time on this swap out.
You say intermixing. I dont understand. The 700r4 can and in my case is not hooked to any computer. The PO went wire cutter happy and gutted the car. IE no computer at all. I spent about 2 weeks solid tracking it all down and making it right. I still dont have an ECM in it. So what I have now is a locked up worthless 350 carbed engine(read paper weight) and no computer anything in it.I tried some of the links on the LT1 swap out sticky here and they were dead links. That is why I am asking here. LT1's are all over the place here in Dallas Tx. Or should I just go old school and drop in a plane jane 350?

Thank you. I went in and changed the title. Ok, I do know what tranny I have it is a 700r4 with no computer anything.

By chance did you read the LT1 swap sticky in the top section of the Engine Swap forums?

Moved this to the LTx and LSx sub-forum.

The TH700R-4 requires the use of a TV cable. Going to an LT1 won't change that. The only LT1's that used a TV cable were the '92-'93 Vettes and '93 f-bodies with the 4L60 transmission (basically the same as a TH700R-4), so at least the throttle body needs to be from one of those applications if you keep your current transmission.

The 3rd gen ECM does lock up the torque converter clutch, unless you've got a stand-alone lock-up kit.

Using a 4th gen LT1 4L60E does make the LT1 swap a little easier, but it doesn't solve all of the problems. The main one is the cable drive speedometer, which requires a box that converts the transmission VSS signal to mechanical motion to drive the speedometer.

The sticky has information about the wiring.

It was the LS1 portion that was giving me the problems. Now that you have clarified things follow the above advice.
