LT1 valve covers

What are you guys doing as far as PCV valves and breathers go? I have the canton valve covers and one side has the oil fill cap and the other has an open hole. I was thinking of using a K&N breather on this. Should I or should I not do this and go with a PCV valve? If i go with the breather how do I plug the large port in the LT1 intake?

I am also not running a vacuum line to the brake booster so I can plug this as well.

Re: LT1 valve covers

Id keep a PCV system in place

Engines have an inlet and outlet for the PCV system. Inlet lets fresh air in (metered for MAF cars) and outlet drawing the dirty crankcase gasses and misted oil out using the manifold vacuum. Generally the in/outs are on opposite valve covers, but GM moved the outlet from the drivers valve cover to the intake base (lifter valley area) for tighter packaging

To run a breather you need to either plug this and cut a hole in each valve cover or run a breather to one and another breather off an extension going to the intake port

FYI, breather systems are notorious for misting down engine bays with oil over a short time

Re: LT1 valve covers

Thanks Pocket. If there are no benefits to the breather then I can pass on it. My setup is a 383 LT1 with a D1SC procharger so dont know if this makes a difference either.

Now I need to find where to get a new or used PCV setup. Any ideas?

I'll check ebay now.

Check a dealer for the formed rubber tube on the pass cover. You can substitute oil safe rubber hose, it just doesnt fit as clean. The port fittings and PCV itself can be had for around $2 from any local parts store

Id suggest a catch can system with multiple check valves for the blower. Dont need to be blowing the dipstick out

Pocket - I am not familiar with the catch can setup and check valves. Would you mind explaining this some more? I will def. be doing research on this before I get the blower installed.

Re: LT1 valve covers

Catch can is a term used to describe automotive air/oil separators used in line with the PCV system to cut down on oil in the chambers. This cuts down on detonation in more picky builds

Generally these are simply a shiny can with ports welded to it, sometimes they also come with internal baffles and coils to better separate the fluids

Check valves are one way valves preventing the gasses from moving the opposite direction in the PCV system. Since the system only operates during idle where the engine will be under vacuum, these keep reversion from coming in when your turbo builds boost

Re: LT1 valve covers

ok, i am making this harder than it needs to be, I was mistaken above, this is what i have now:

Canton valve covers with the drive side valve cover having no holes in it. it is sealed.

The passenger side has the oil fill cap and a hole. Does a PCV go into this hole and to any hole into the intake? or a specific hole?

There is a large hole on the driver side of the intake. Does a pcv go into this as well?

confused myself now... because is there 1 pcv? and if so which place does it belong and if two then am i right above?

attached are pics of what i have now. one PCV installed in intake and I was thinking of just running a U-shape hose to the hose connection just to the right and above the PCV

i put a grommet in the passenger valve cover but not sure what to do now.. lol

I appreciate the help.
