some LT1 questions

Hi guys, i´m a new member and i come from germany. But I hope someone helps me anyway.

I have a 89 Camaro RS 2.8L with 5Speed MT and a 96 Trans Am LT1 with T56. Now i want to swap the LT1 in my camaro. I would like to use as many existing parts as possible. Now i have bought a T65 Crossmember, a Speedo converter, V8 Engine Mounts,(MSD Optispark, Iridium spark plugs) and WS6 Springs. I will use the complete 96´ Rear axle and the Fuel system. I will modify the wiring myself.
But can I use the original exhaust manifolds? What exhaust parts do I need? Do i will use some other parts?

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. I've moved it to the LTx and LSx swap sub-forum so it will get more attention.

I'll let someone who is more familiar with the LT1 details answer your questions.

The exhaust manifolds will be close to the k-member and may not work. I think one member used them, but had to have a y-pipe made. You could pick up a set of Hedman Headers w/ the D-Ports, which will fit nicely. Another option is to pick up exhaust manifolds from a 350 3rd gen. They are not D-Ports, but they will work.

Re: some LT1 questions

Hello, thank you for the answer. I have paid a lot for the other parts. Now i have to respect the price. What is the cheapest exhaust system(headers, y-pipe and cats) that you can recommend me?
Do anyone have wiring diagrams for the 96 LT1? I have to know the pinout of the connectors(C100, C210, C220, C230 usw.) but i only can find the 93-95 pinout. But 96 it is a OBDII Data link connector. What is the different in the wiring.

Re: some LT1 questions

Yes i have read this. But the wiring is for the 95 LT1. I need the 96.
The headers:
I hoped that anyone can tell me some Part Number for a cheap Header-y-pipe-cats-combo.
Maybe you can tell me which exhaust-parts(with number or link) you have used.
How do your underbody look? Do anyone have a two cats system(please pictures and part-numbers)? For a good Long tubes and two-cat system a would wait a monthly salary longer

Re: some LT1 questions

The PN for the headers are in there, since you said cheap I suppose you want shorties.Hedman 68479, you will have to buy O2 bungs and have them welded in either the headers. (check summit).

The wiring is almost the same as the 94/95 they just added a few sensors. You can have the rear O2's programed out and run simulators. I run 1 cat and those same headers with there y pipe.

Re: some LT1 questions

Can I use the original y-pipe? Or do I need 3rd gen parts?

EDIT:
Can I use the Flowtech headers?:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BIG-16102FLT/
Then I will use the LT1 Y-Pipe a universal kat and the Flowtech Y-Pipe und build a custom Y-Pipe. Does it Works?
Which Bungs can i use? 18mm x 1.5 or 3/4 in. NPT or ...
And what i D-Port? is it for EGR and secondary air?

And i thing that a Dual Cat system have a better air flow.

Re: some LT1 questions

Its restrictive for a TPI system, how do you think it will fare in front of a LT1?

Why not tune it out of the system? The PCM needs a tune regardless to kill VATS and to set your gears/tires. Not too much of a stretch to do the job right

Those headers you posted wont work. You need 1 5/8" primaries or larger to cover the D-ports on the LT1 cyl heads

Go to any exhaust shop and get a set of O2 bungs. If that's not an option go to a parts store and get the large plug anti-foulers. Cut the collar off and they fit O2s just fine

Re: some LT1 questions

I think i will use the Hedmans and weld a 3´y-pipe with two 3´ Cats. I hope there are enough space on underbody.
Can I use the original 96 middle pipe?

Re: some LT1 questions

I recently installed a Lt1 engine in my 91 camaro that had a 305 tbi. I modified the Lt1 to a carb w/ hei distributor, a very mild cam also with an eletric water pump. One question is is a 600 cfm edelbrock carb too small for this engine. p/n= 1405 edelbrock carb. second question is how would I time the engine there is no timing marks on the balancer. My trouble shooting is when I'm sitting at a light and floor it the car don't move, and if I'm driving and I want to floor it. It boggs out.
Please help me on this prob. I've been racking my brain on this for a couple of months and can't figure it out. Someone for the outside might jar my marble loose. Thanks

Re: some LT1 questions

Not for sure, you might want to try over at LS1tech, most over here have kept their LT1's FI.

Re: some LT1 questions

Any decent sized bolt thats not on the intake will lift the engine

I commonly leave the exhaust manifolds bolted on and wrap a seatbelt around them when pulling in a yard
