Building an LT1

Guys, i just found an LT1 block only for 40.00...he says no cracks or defects but ill go check it out myself. Ive always wanted to start with a block and build a complete engine myself and this looks like a good opportunity. Would it be worth getting the LT1 or would their be a cheaper/easier route to go? How hard is is the 305-LT1 swap? What kind of power gains should i expect on a budget build? Thanks for any help.

Start by reading the LT1 swap sticky in the top section of this forum.

It makes more sense to me to get a complete drop-out (engine, harness, sensors, PCM, transmission, accessories) than to start with a bare "good deal". Trying to piece a complete swap together will nickle & dime you to death.

Of course, you could get the block, build it up with whatever crank (like stroker), rods, pistons, cam and heads you want, then use the rest of the drop-out to complete it.

Depending upon what 305 you're starting with, you can easily double the power.

Thanks...i read the sticky right after i posted...so you think itd be pretty hard to piece it all together? I dont think he has anything but the block so id have to come up with everything else...now i may just wait until i come across something a bit more reasonable.

Not so much "hard", as it is "expensive". You could easily find a drop-out for $1500-$2000 (perhaps less if you're planning on a total rebuild and would be willing to take one that is being sold as a builder). The individual pieces - harness, PCM, accessories, transmission, etc., will add up to a lot more in the end.
