this is what i was talking about the full frame under the car.. talk about stiff..

sry about the blurry pics i was using my phone..
u can see in the last pic how stiff the car is i have the jackstand on the welded in frame rail right infront of the rear tire and the fron tire is off the ground.. do u think that it might be 2 stiff? i want this to be a nice day driver yet still be able to handle on the road course..

GOT ALOT DONE TODAY AFTER WORK!!
got the 4th gen wiring untangled and laid down in place. got the door wiring laid out in the stock location and the engine bay harness laid out and threw the firewall.. man what a job that was!! that roll cage has turned out to be more of a pain in the a$$ to work around then it seamed like before..
i got the rear end ready to come out.. i would have had it out if my jack didnt fail while i was under it and had already took the springs and shocks out! and i took the custom th400 cross member out..

tomorrow first thing in the morning im going to the parts store to get the oil pan gasket and the new motor mounts and i will be dropping in the motor !! after i get the rear out im going to put my gas tank in from the 4th gen while my 4th gen rear is out side drying from its fresh coat of paint!

Looking good man! I'm sure that LT1 can't wait to be between the frame rails of a TA again, lol. I'll be looking forward to seeing the motor in. Any idea what color you want the car to be when it comes time to paint it??

Re: 91 camaro frame up rebuild and lt1 swap* IT HAS STARTED*
got alot done today but not as much as i wanted.. i got the old rear out and the old gastank out and installed the 4th gen gas tank and rear.. also picked up my new motor mounts and gaskets. man what a pain it is getting those mounts on there!!!! i cant believe gm made that soo hard!!! the car is ready for the motor to be dropped in i will have it in there tomorrow i would have had it in today but my buddy stole my helper to go fix his truck. so i was stuck pulling and installing the rear and gastank by myself which i dont mind i seam to work better alone but its always good to have an extra set of hands when dealing with a heavy rearend..
the rear end was a simple bolt in but the gas tank on the other ill have to take back out when i get back from basic and extend the filler next.. ill probably go with a plastic tank if that.. also the 4rd gen tank straps are 2 short.. and of course i threw out the 4th gen ones.. tomorrow i plan to have the motor and trans installed so the complete drive train will be installed and i hope to have some time to work on the wiring mess on the interior and get the carpet in and trimmed around the cage

Re: 91 camaro frame up rebuild and lt1 swap* IT HAS STARTED*
BIG UPDATE!
Motor, gas tank, rearend, new motor mounts, engine bay harness and interior harness are in!!!!!!
I was busy over the weekend.. I did the complete rearend and gastank swap by myself in about 3 hrs then today me and a buddy got the motor in..
But with me losing my job I don't think the car will be running before I leave for the military in april.. if I had know I was ganna lose my job I wouldn't have bought the hood or other goodies for the car and just gotten what I needed.. but they were a really really good deal that I just couldn't pass up.. so inless someone wants to donate me there old spark plug wires and opti cap, battery cables, I don't think ill be able to get her going before I leave.. I can't put anymore money into the car inless I have money comming in and I leave april. 11 for basic so it would be stupid to get another job and then have to leave.. it sucks comming this far and being so close to just watch it be pulled away from me.. anyway I plan to get what I have done like the interior and all the wiring and just see how far I can get before I leave.. I wasn't expecting to be able to drive the car since all the brake lines needs to be replaced but I would have liked to at least have had it started.. either way I come back from basic ill have a few grand saved up and ill be able to buy all new brakes for the car with braided lines and what ever else I need.. I have other project I need to worry about before I leave like puting my trans ,shocks ball joints and tie rods back in my f150 so my wife can tow her horses around while I'm gone, ill have pics of the trans am up soon.. my ranting is done lol

Damn you and your taunting us with no pics!!
LOL, can't wait to see all the progress when you get those pics up tomorrow. And best of luck with finding the parts you need before basic......just don't rush it. If you gotta wait, you gotta wait. I'd hate to see something hacked in.

Looks good man, I love those torque 2s, I've got the same ones.
I hope when you say "wheel gap" your refering to the front, and not the 4th gen rear. I really think the rear sets off the new hood and rims.
Regardless, coming along good! Shame that basics came up so fast.

the 4th gen rear didnt really seam to make the rear wheels stick out like i thought it would.. they actually tuck .. and yes i was referring to the front mostly.. but i need to drop the car about 2 inchs all the way around.. the motor is in, in all the pics above and the wheel gap in the front is insane!! i couldnt belive it!! there are new font monroe struts installed also im hoping that it will drop down .. and yes it does suck that baisc snuck up on me like it did but o well.. ill be able to drop a good amount of money into the car when i get back tho.. hmmmm spohn, bmr, hawks, just to name a few taking my hard earned cash lol

Re: 91 camaro sold/ 86 TRANS AM lt1 swap* MOTOR IS IN!!*
Looking good! Is the trans in yet? I'm guessing the wheel gap should settle a little with the trans too. Weird that it still sits so high with the motor in lol. I also noticed it lookes like theres a rip in the dash on the pass side right uner where the airbag is to the left. Is that as bad as it looks in the pics?

Yea it has a rip in the dash it was like that when I took it out of the 4thgen and it is as bad as it looks in the pics. I'm using it for mock up then I will pick up a ebony dash from another ta.. I had found a few more in the junk yards and was actually ganna go pick it up but with me looking my job I can't do that..no the trans isn't in yet but will be in this week cuz I gatta get the car outta the garage and get my ford in and put a trans in that to

Re: 91 camaro sold/ 86 TRANS AM lt1 swap* MOTOR IS IN!!*
ok guys got a lil more of an update.. motor is back out.. as i said before i just had it sitting in there.. well as it was sitting in there i saw a lil oil pool up on the floor checked it out and the oil pan gasket was leaking so i pulled her back out and threw a new gasket on there. i never really had it bolted in there so it really didnt matter.. well now i cant seam to line it up on the motor mounts.. ive heard people mixing up the mounts so i droped the spindles again and this time took the springs out since i was tired of fighting them. but i still cant get it to line up right.. im tired of fighting with it in the car im ganna drop the k member, bolt the motor mounts to the motor and then hook up the trans and lower the car ontop of the motor im tired of messing with this.. also went to the junk yard with a buddy the other day looking for parts for him and came across a caprice with the lt1 in it and got a set of msd wires that had only been on the car for 1500 miles! tuned up was marked at 145k and the odo only read 146k!!! looked brand freakin new.. also got my power steering pump and a few odd bolts just in case so now the only thing i need is an alternator and a opti cap and i should be able to start her up after i hook up the wiring.. i think the only thing than can hold me back from that is the pass key since i switched steering coloums.. if thats the case ill have to wait till i get back from basic and send the computer out to be tuned.. ill have some more pics up soon.. probably doing the motor tomorrow

are you using the motor mounts from your old engine?? One of the LT1 mounts won't work with the third gen K member.

yea as i was cleaning up i happend to find 2 mounts from a 305 or one of the 350s i did in the past that either came out of a camaro or firebird/trans am.. and also ive heard that the 4th gen ones will work and fit it up to the mount on the k member and it fit right in weither or not it bolts to the block and then to the k member idk ..

I had same problem. I used my stock 305 brackets to mount the LT1 to the Spohn K-member and the passenger bolt didnt line up. had to drill it out and make it work. what a PITA

I don't know why, but mine dropped right into place. I lined up passenger side first, and the driver side went right into place.
Strange it dropped in fine before and now its being stubborn.

It should line up perfectly with standard sbc mounts. Weird. You probably just have to massage it in there.

Re: 91 camaro sold/ 86 TRANS AM lt1 swap* MOTOR IS IN!!*
i figured out what it was!! well my buddy did atleast.. theres a small alumi bracket on the passenger side of the block.. well in the 4th gen its used for somthing else i guess well it covers the hole for the one motor mount.. but the motor mount was able to mount next to it.. all i had to do was remove that one bracket move the mount over and drop her on to the k member then wrestle the kmember motor and trans into the car.. not the quickest thing in the world but we got it in.. and i got the pool of tranny fluid to prove it

Same bracket I pictured in my swap? Yeah I removed it too, I don't even think it serves a purpose.

Re: 91 camaro sold/ 86 TRANS AM lt1 swap* MOTOR IS IN!!*
yea that same freaking bracket!! i couldnt believe it and i was so freakin mad.. so for all u lt1 swapers out there MAKE SURE U TAKE THAT DAMN BRACKET OFF FOR UR MOTOR MOUNTS..
updates for today!
the weather was really crappy today and i had court in the morning so i didnt get much done really lol i got the driver side spring back in and got the strut bolted up man what was a pita without the spring compressor! but with a long pribar 3lbs sledge and a good jack it went in with a good amount of effert.. the other side shouldnt be so hard since i did it once now..
im having 1 problem now i went threw my bucket of bolts and cant seam to find the trans cross member bolts.. so its being held up by a jackstand right now i have some bolts that go in but dont get tight so i need to go to the store and get 1 size bigger.. man do i hate buying bolts and such when i have 2 buckets full of them.. i guess the 4th gen bolts arrent the same or i have the wrong ones.. o well either way here are the pics from the motor and trans install.. i still think this way is the easyiest way just takes a lil time and u dont have to worry about scratching a nice engine bay paint job this way! mines only rattle can but still.. trying to fit a motor and trans in that things are ganna get scratched..
.. ** note to anyone thats decided to put the motor and trans in this way u dont have to take the springs out to do it.. i removed them to intall the mounts cuz i was tired of fighting them!.. **

Re: 91 camaro sold/ 86 TRANS AM lt1 swap* MOTOR IS IN!!*
So I got a lil bit done today.. got my underdrive pulley installed, waterpump painted n installed opti cleaned up and reinstalled, msd wires installed n autolite plugs are in. Got my acc bracket cleaned up painted and installed along with my ac delete pully and tensioner pully. Starter was cleaned up and painted and installed also. I learned the hard way a powersteering pump from a caprice will not work on a fbody acc bracket so that was my last 40$ down the drain. I also got my steering brackety back in. Plan for tomorrow is to do the trans on my ford but if that doesn't happen I would like to finish up the engine bay harness and get the rad, connect the ecu hook up the rest of my grounds and possibly throw a battery in and see if she cranks the fuel line arrent ran yet so it won't start. And I also found out today that there's no way that my long tube headers will fit and I already scrapped stock manifolds.. so I'm kinds **** outta luck till I get back.. but if I can get to the point of the start up I'm ganna start it anyway..I just wanna hear it run

yeah all the acc are f-body specific, kind of makes it a pain if when your trying to save money on slightly used parts. i wish i had a set of headers for you to use or even borrow but im trying to sell my last LT1 part as we speak on NJFBOA and thats a 6speed PCM so that won't even help you lol

well i will be looking at a 6 spd swap when i get back from basic.. ill have a good amount of $ saved up.. somewhere in the 10k range so im thinking of droping like 4k on the car. im really not worried about the headers.. like i said if i get a chance to start it up im ganna start it.. so it will be insanely loud... i just wanna hear it run.. running no headers for a few seconds isnt ganna hurt anything.. just gatta make sure all the wires are clear so i dont melt anything =P

Truthfully I would be just as happy just to have it crank over by the key!

Re: 91 camaro sold/ 86 TRANS AM lt1 swap* MOTOR IS IN!!*
havent gotten much of anything done.. ive been taking care of other projects ive put off for the trans am but now its last min.. ive put my trans back in my f150 now ive had to put front shocks on it and a steering gear box and a new starter so my wife can drive it while im gone.. i ended up putting the trans in by myself which sucked it almost killed me but i got it in.. ended up slipping off the jack and landed up my chest.. luckly i caught it before it fully came loose from the jack.. tomorrow is the steering box ans starter.. then thats done... hopefully..
only thing i got done on my trans am is i hooked up the ecu and ran the wires and connected them to the under dash wires.. all i really need to do now is connect my grounds in my interior harness and engine harness.. my buddys got a 94 formula thats ganna let me use his alternartor and battery to see if its ganna start up.. so ill keep my fingers crossed.. wish me luck.. oh and for u guys keeping track.. i leave on monday for basic training.. if i dont get the car started by friday then im not ganna bother with it.. my last few days are for my wife.. oh i also get married on thrusday!
