Cause for concern?

I found myself a pretty decent deal on an LQ4/9 (confirmation pending) out of an '04 Silverado, and already has the 317 heads on it. Comes complete from top to bottom, front to back with complete undamaged harness for $600.

My only question is: The guy says the number 7 lifter "bleeds" at idle. This should be as easy as replacing the lifter, shouldn't it? Should this be cause for concern? I would rather not buy cheap up front and spend a fortune on the back end trying to make things right.

Re: Cause for concern?

Wonder how he came to that conclusion? Did somebody who knew what they were doing listen to it of is he just guessing? My guess it's more along the line of piston slap but I'd have to hear it to know for sure.

Re: Cause for concern?

It's a repair shop that is selling it so I can only assume he would know. BUT, that's why I am asking....it could be that it's a pile that he is just trying to unload. He is not in the used car part business and just wants it out of there.

You have to pull the head to get to the lifters.

Re: Cause for concern?

I appreciate the responses. I guess what I am getting at is, would this piece of information lead you to not buy this engine? From what I understand most of these engines have a slight tick to them anyway. I guess worst case scenario I can recover my $600 by selling it off in pieces, so I guess I sort of answered my own question.

There's nothing easy about lifter swaps on LS blocks, you have to remove the cylinder head to get to the lifters.

I'd be wary of the seller's claim that the "#7 lifter" bleeds, given that there are two #7 lifters not just one.

pretty common for the cam to be bad on the lobe... but most like to swap that out anyway

I had budgeted a bit more for the motor. Now that I have a little wiggle room I might as well swap the cam and springs too. My main concern was just to find out if a statement like the one he gave me would be a cause for concern. I am pretty new to these motors. Just needed a little reassurance

Re: Cause for concern?

if you are going to pull the heads might as well spring for some arp head bolts instead of the torque to yield stockers. much easier to torque down.

Re: Cause for concern?

Is it coming with accessories or will you be purchasing an accessory setup for it?

I agree to ****** it up. Too bad you cant listen to it first... The LS platform motors make all sorts of noises sometimes. Piston slap is very common. Hopefully its nothing major.

BUT...if you are replacing the cam, lifters, springs etc anyway...you should be ok.

Passenger car front accessories and intake make the install a lot easier.

Re: Cause for concern?

Picked it up today. Put my negotiating skills to use and picked it up for $450

Only drawback is it comes with the green/blue harness plugs at the ECM. I'll have to go back and dig up the info, but from what I recall this is not very desirable. If need be I'll sell the harness.

I'm pretty stoked regardless

Should have gotten the PCM with it as well.

Not a big issue, I don't believe.

Re: Cause for concern?

popped one of the valve covers and peeked inside the spark plug hole. Looks like an LQ4.

Its just a cast flat-top piston package. Hardly worth the huge markup common on 9's
