Is that an LS6 intake? And what heads are on it?

I'm going to post a few more pics of the project if you guys don't mind. I have had a few people ask about intercooler mock up and cross over tube location. Hope some of these pics help.

The Crossover tube with flex pipe in the middle.. It scrapes on the ground some at low points.. I need to move the flex pipe to a different spot.

Header building was a blast! If it weren't for my good buddy Joe, I would have had a very tough time taking on this task as it was my first time for a turbo project. Sorry about some of the pics being crappy.. They were quick cell phone shots as we worked.

Having a second set of heads laying around helps with mock up on the bench. Lots of trial and error until we had the clearance we wanted. That is how this procedure went.

The fuel pump was a fun little project. Got the idea from Randy Yates (yatesefi.com) to mount everything to one plate that could be completely removed from the car if it needed serviced. Here is what I came up with. Bosch O44 pump with pre-filter and post filter. -10 in and -8 out

Re: 85 Z28 Turbo ls1/T56 build

Sorry for leaving the forums and not returning.. So many times you see people build these awesome projects and then the thread dies and you never hear another word of how things went or what they did next.. I'm going to try and revive my thread and continue with info on phase two of what I like to call "The great white buffalo".

My first setup was fun and a great learning experience. It was an iron 5.3 bored to stock ls1 specs with super low compression and a TC78 turbo "custom" cam 241 heads, ls6 intake and a T56. Got 700+whp at 18psi.. but the lag was killin me on the street.. I feel like I learned what I liked and didn't like with this combo, especially since it is a street car. I don't care for the track much, Its just not my thing. I like the T56, but I shift like a grandma. I like burnouts, but I don't want rubber all over the back of my car and I paid a lot of money for those damn tires!

I want the next setup to be quick spooling and fun. I'm going to stick with stock ls1 specs and 10:1 compression. I want to run lower boost with some TWINS I feel this will be a very fun street setup and its my money so don't try and tell me how I should waste it!

That being said, here are some pics of a few parts I've been gathering the past few weeks. I'll keep you updated as more presents arrive.

while the snow fell outside.. This pic was going on in the garage!

some head clean up going on by my buddy joey

Then these bad boys arrived...

Mock up makes me happy!

Tubular helps pipes fit better

More pics and progress to come. I have some springs and shocks coming from Ground Control in a few weeks. They are having SSS make my springs as we speak is what they told me.

Why do you think you had such lag with the single turbo? Do you think it was cam selection or the turbo selection? What size are you going to for with the twins

Don't get me wrong, the car was fun and quick. I always liked the thought of twins and that was my ultimate goal. I'm sure there were multiple circumstances that caused the lag. The compression was below 9:1 for starters.. Mistakes on my part caused the lag. LOL I'm sure the response would have been better with a little higher compression, or a 2 step. A few guys recommended I go with a PT7675 and I would have seen more power and response. I decided to sell it all while I had a guy interested who was happy to take the setup off my hands, so I could save and plan for what I really wanted.

Re: 85 Z28 Turbo ls1/T56 build

Continuing with collecting parts! Picked up my 317 heads from the shop with a valve job, some milling and new springs. I should be around 9.5:1 compression on this setup.

Pretty valve covers for a change from stock. Bought my Balancer, arp bolt, and some fuel rails. Still waiting to hear from ground control for some suspension parts. Now that the heads are back I'm going to get the motor in with the new BMR k member and start mock up for the hot side next. This means I have to take the plunge and purchase my turbos. Still deciding on that.. I'll get back to you.

just some ls6 springs? boost is known to blow valves open with not enough spring pressure.

i guess without knowing how much boost you're going to run, i can't really comment, but i'm thinking it's not gonna be enough seat pressure.

Valve spring replacement. Big thanks to mw66nova for catching that for me. I should have paid closer attention. Great valve spring tool kit as well. Very easy to use.

Re: 85 Z28 Turbo ls1/T56 build

Progress little by little. Decided to get that K member mocked up last night. Taking the old stuff out wasn't too bad at all. I know spring compressors are always recommended, but we were careful lowering the a arms with the jack so the springs didn't pop out and cause injury or death.

Had to post the oil cap my friend engraved for me at work. This is the name I have given to my Camaro LOL. I don't remember how we started calling it this other than the time the first turbo setup was being built the movie Hot tub time machine was popular and my Camaro is white, so it just worked out.

This thing is massive compared to its replacement.

Paint got a little warm in some areas with the last turbo setup.

Purchased Founders performance caster/camber plates and some rear adjustable suspension goodies.

Had to do a little notching for the mounting holes on the K member to make it fit (Driver side only). Other than that, all of this stuff has been a direct bolt it.

Front GC stuff and Koni yellows are in for mock up. Just had to snag a pic of it on the ground real quick.

Any up dates on the build. I'm really interested to see how those headers fit in the car. I built my own, similar to your first built but for twins. Haven't run mine yet but once I get it going I'd like to upgrade to headers like your using.

Re: 85 Z28 Turbo ls1/T56 build

Little by little. Got the 4th gen fans mounted. Bought some stainless and started playing with mock up. Tried the manifolds just to see what kind of room I had. Decided to stay with the headers. I bought some reducers and hacked the 3" vbands off the end of the headers, then welded up the reducer with a smaller 2.5 vband. Not sure how much time I'll have this winter, but I'll keep trying.

Badass, good to see ya working on her again!

Are those the eBay headers? I've been kicking them around for my car. How do they fit?

Hey Tyler!! They are the ebay up and forwards. Can't beat the price. They are nice. Little tight on that passenger side, but was able to run my 3" down pipe right underneath it.

Re: 85 Z28 Turbo ls1/T56 build

Thanks for the comments guys! Yes, BMR K member, I plan to run A/C with an aftermarket setup like vintage air. I don't have numbers from the single turbo personally. I never ran the last setup. The guy I sold it to put it in a 76 Camaro and has taken it into the 10's with an auto. Still working on things.. Christmas and the busy season at my work has slowed me down some, but I plan to be running by spring. I did snag this Son of a Tranzilla TR6060/T56. Built to support 1000whp. Not that I plan to push it there just yet. Came with some goodies, MGW shifter and McLeod RXT clutch. Pretty happy with that purchase.

Not sure how I missed this build to this point, but this car is beautiful. Looking forward to what it turns into.

Decided it was time to change the wheels up. Dark stars! New project means it needs new shoes. I personally love this look.. Didn't think I would because I've always been a fan of polished wheels, but I guess I have changed over the years.

Have you swapped to a different rad because of that? I'd love to run that radiator due to how neatly it tucks in.

15x8 rear wheels 275/60 ET street radials. Ground control spring kit. The radiator is a custom spec triple pass. I had to modify the bottom rad. Support and lower it a few inches to make it tuck in there like that.

Some Vintage air parts arrived. I'm excited about this. A/C is just something I've always missed in this car. Hot humid days around the midwest make cruising dripping sweat a less than enjoyable experience. I figure I might as well boost around in comfort and style.

Re: 85 Z28 Turbo ls1/T56 build

Very nice clean build. Beautiful car and fab work.

I'm curious on the down pipes from the turbos, what size exhaust tubing and how did the routing go? Passenger side under/over or thru the k member or???

And no rack- Staying with a steering box I'm assuming from the pics? How did the placement of drivers side turbo or actually the drivers down pipe work with the steering box/steering shaft, etc.?

True duals out the back or does it merge somewhere like a standard long tube lsx swap?

Spark plug access PITA or OK?

Thanks!

Thank you!! Down pipes are not complete yet. They are mocked to right where the standard manifolds would have exited right now. They both just route over the top of the K member. I kept the down pipe high on the passenger side to allow a/c lines. The driver side was pretty simple and its right over the top of the manual steering box and shaft, its low enough there are no issues getting to spark plugs also. I plan to do a merge of some kind into a single 3.5" to 4" pipe.
