LT1/T56 in a Purple Haze Heritage 1992 Z28 vert
This is my dad's new car that he picked up a few months ago as a roller. We have an L98, twisted wedge TrickFlow heads, an Accel intake base, and Edelbrock runners to put on it and were going to put a decent cam in it. But a good friend of mine is going to be pulling out a 70k mile LT1 with ported intake and heads, a nice cam, and his T56, and we made a verbal deal last night that my dad will be buying everything to put in the convertible.
My friend is going to be playing musical motors this winter. He works at a GMC dealership and one of their customers bought a brand new 2011 Camaro SS, and before he drove it off the lot, he paid for a 427 to be put in it, so the LS3 with only 10 miles on it is going to be going into a friend of my friend's LS1 SS Camaro. The original LS1 that was in that car is going into my friend's 1996 SS Camaro, and the LT1/T56 from the '96 SS are going into my dad's '92 Z28.
The cam I believe is a 232/232 608"/608" 108LSA. The car made 351hp on a dyno jet through a TH350 and a 4,000 stall. With the T56 I'd imagine it's probably close to 380hp at the wheels, maybe a little more. It runs door to door with my LS2 Camaro, but the '96 SS weighs 600lbs less than my car.
------------------------------------------------------------
Now for the details. I've looked at the LT1 swap stickies, and some of the links are broken (go figure, they're from like 8 or 9 yrs ago). My dad wants to keep a/c, so I've read there may be some modifications necessary on the passenger side motor mount, or he can get an a/c relocation kit. If he decides to modify the pass side mount, how do we do that, can you provide pictures of this? This was one of the links that was broken, took me to some yahoo domain search site...
Another thing is, he already has a beautiful set of shorty 3rd gen headers, and I do believe they are Hooker or Headman. I will have to check. Will either of these work with an LT1 in a 3rd gen? He's wanting to keep this as cost effective as possible since we have so many parts designated for this car to begin with.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Here's the car that will be receiving the combo:

Looks like fun Nick!
Depending on the primary size, the headers will be fine. I wouldn't run 1 5/8 on it FWIW

I put a $500 deposit on the new drivetrain tonight, so this deal is ready to go as soon as the first engine is pulled out of the LS1 Camaro.

The purple is pretty sick
Here's a video so you can see the h/c/i LT1 in action. It's the '96 SS.

We bought the drivetrain tonight and brought it home. Does anyone know if Hooker Super Comp 2055's will work with lt1 heads?

Yep they fit, They are the budget headers most go with for the swap besides the Hedmans.

Depends upon whether the porting did anything to the exhaust port shape. The 2055's aren't specifically designed for the LT1 D-ports, but people have said they are okay with them.
Personally, the 2055 flange slightly occluded the ports of my World Gen I heads, so I did a little clean-up of the flanges. You can't do too much, though, because the tubes are welded to the inside of the flange. If you can, it's best to weld around the tubes on the outside of the flange, then you can port match to your heart's content (as long as you maintain some sealing surface on the inside of the flange for the header gasket).

Re: Swap #3: LT1/T56 in a Heritage 1992 Z28 vert
Good to know, thanks!
Here's the engine and trans combo he picked up.
Specs are:
350ci LT1
ARP head bolts
ported stock heads
ported stock intake (58mm)
2.05/1.60 Ferra valves
232/232 .608/.608 108LSA
CSR electric water pump
MSD opti and coil
Flow numbers on the heads:
.200 153/118
.300 207/167
.400 253/197
.500 275/214
.600 284/225
T56
Ram HD clutch
stock shifter, will probably get a hurst or Pro 5.0
Through a TH350 this engine put down 351rwhp/307ft-lbs. I believe it is probably closer to 380-390rwhp through the T56. The car that this came out of is a 3,020 lb Camaro that ran door to door, literally, with my 420rwhp Camaro that weighs 3,600 lbs.
Got a really good deal on this stuff because it's a friend of mine, paid $2,200 for eveything. It came with the full wiring harness and the ECM which is already tuned. So once the car is back from paint we'll be starting the install. We're both pretty excited!

Re: Swap #3: LT1/T56 in a Heritage 1992 Z28 vert
Sorry to leave everyone hanging, he sold the blue IROC-Z with the ls1 swap to "marokid" here on TGO, who drove down from Dayton Ohio to get it last year.
The purple vert is still in the paint booth, a friend of mine is spraying it and has been busy moving and getting married and has a new normal job of Monday thru Friday. He will have it done soon though. I just sent him two replacement parts for the ground effects after he pulled them all off and noticed two parts had been botched with repairs. He put a paint sample in the mail to me this week after mixing up some different purples. I'll take a picture of the sample when it gets here.

Got some updated pictures today. We are planning to pick it up at the end of March, but will know an exact date probably next weekend. The base/clear has been laid, and this coming week the stripes will be laid out. The color is a special blend of the original Purple Haze/Hawaiin Orchid and House of Kolor "Chameleon".

My buddy that's painting it added a little black accent to the rear bumper. With black headlight buckets and door handles, he said the rear needed something too.

We are picking it up from paint on April 6th and bringing it home to start the swap. In the meantime some of the engin parts are going to be getting powder coated like the intake manifold and brackets.
The stripes turned out awesome. I can't post up the unique graphics that were added to the driver side blister as its a suprise for my dad but once I get the car again I'll post it up. Or I can email them to anyone that can't wait haha

This swap is officially on hold until I get my harness back from Pocket. The engine and trans are installed, paint job is done, just waiting on the harness that was paid for back in October...

This is the third harness he's built for me personally. In fact I was his very first customer with my convertible, and now it seems I'm getting the shaft.

ive never dealt with him before but i thought he was a pretty stand up guy for doing this service for the people that are intimidated by wiring. not so much anymore i guess. sorry for your bad luck with this harness and i hope you and everbody else gets taken care of. there are plenty of people that can help yall out with harnesses out there.

Yea I fully intend to use the services of someone else if it turns out that he hasn't finished this harness and I get a refund. I'm hoping the case is that it is done like he has said, and he is just totally dropping the ball on getting it shipped to me.

yea for your sake i hope so too. Im feeling like thats not the case though.i wouldnt think shipping a completed harness out thats already been paid for shouldnt be that big of a deal. i think there is something else going on.

Oops, must have over looked it. That looks like a stout motor that should have no problem lighting up the tires all the way through second. I know my buddy's stock lt1 besides headers, electric water pump, and a small mail order tune had no problem going sideways and smoking the tires. One word of advice for your dad though, he's gonna want to get something better to hold the rear end down, my friends wheel hopped really bad.

He will upgrade the suspension probably next year. This year he just wants to get it running.
He does at least have a Spohn phb as a start.

i can understand the want to get it running, i still have to get my vortec rebuild thats sitting in my garage on the stand. id recomened founders for his upgrades, mostly for the rear hop all he should need are new lower control arms and a relocation bracket. should hold that rear to the ground nicely.

Here are updated pictures. I'm mailing out the wiring harnesses to another member here to get the swap harness built and this is how she sits.
The SLP 2OTL exhaust looks great in my opinion. It's going to sound even better.

Lookin' good. I'm glad you are at least making a little harness progress. I've got mine about 3/4 of the way done. Good luck with it. Hopefully the new guy will knock it out quickly for you.

Re: LT1/T56 in a Purple Haze Heritage 1992 Z28 vert
Got the harness in the mail from Z28ricer and starting plugging everything in tonight. Had to order two o2 sensors and a coolant temp sending unit, and gotta find the right plug for the C4 a/c compressor. After those small items are done, gotta have an o2 bung welded onto the passenger side header and just finish up wiring the power distribution block and she should be about ready to fire finally! yesssssssss

Me too...My friend that we bought the engine and trans from had the totl exhaust on his SS but not when he had this engine in the car. He changed the exhaust when the original blow threw a rod and so I never heard he totl with this particular setup...

Re: LT1/T56 in a Purple Haze Heritage 1992 Z28 vert
My dad was dropping it off at the shop to get a few last items done to get it running for this weekend and the thing rolled off the trailer accidentally into another trailer on the lot, destroying the rear bumper and doing sone damage to the quarter panel. I havent seen it yet but he said its prettt bad and hes real upset about it...we are lookin into the possibility of flying the painter in town (7 hrs away by car)...freaking sucks.

If I understand your question correctly, no we dropped it off in Kansas last year to get the paint done. We picked it up earier this year and have been assembling the swap and its finally close to firing and this crap happens.

Sorry to hear about the accident. That really sucks to be that close and get jumped 2 steps back.
What X-Member are you using for your T56 though? I'm am looking to get rid of my Spohn mount. It sits way too low and scrapes on everything. Yours looks very clean and simple.

It's the Hawks double hump cross member. If you were to try and use an aftermarket TA like Spohn's, you'd need to get creative for the front mount.

He's looking to try to get the sheet metal beat back in and welded shut and then ground down and filled as opposed to cutting the quarter off and having a new one trimmed down and welded on. It definitely sucks either way you do it...
