need tranny advice for my swap
hello everyone im continuing my swa into my 88 camaro. i started with a 99 5.3 truck motor and slowly converted it to ls1 specs, except ls6 intake cam yada yada yada
im in the market for a tranny. im interested in the 4l60e., im going to save up and buy a decently built one . now my questions
do i need a specific year, or model.?
how built do i need to go, it will see the track a couple times but 99percent using dot street tires and mainly its gonna be a street car.

you can get a good used 4l80 for around 300. You will have to do some reading but i think you will need a flywheel spacer (cheap) a rebuild kit with some good clutches and a person to put it in. Your ecu will work fine.

Re: need tranny advice for my swap
Its not as simple as bolting it in and being on your way. The 4l80e is much larger than a 4l60e and will require some bell housing trimming and possibly floor man beating. There are also some wires that need tgo be switched around in the connector for the trans. Your PCM will also have to be reflashed for a 4l80e as there are a few different inputs and outputs. If your looking for quick easy and less of a headache then go with a built 4l60e. It will do just fine in your setup. Mine has handled a 10.90 car for many years with no issues.

Are 4l80's really that cheap? I thought they were bringing more than the 60's?
I think there are a couple guys running 80's in their cars. Check over on TECH too... The floor pans between a 4th gen and 3rd gen are PRETTY close... I seem to remember some clearancing being necessary either way.
Like quick said...the 60 will do you just fine though.

As far as the 4l60e you will want one from a 99 up truck(new body style) or and fbody. The newer ones have a 360 degree bell housing. The 4l80e can be used from any year. they did not change anything as far as the trans when they put them behind a LS engine. All they did was add a crank spacer for the flex plate. If you plan on running a tail shaft mounted torque arm then you will need a tail housing from a camaro or TA. If your running some other torque arm setup then the truck tail housing will be fine.

go the 4l60e and just use a kit with reys or borg warners, Zpac for the 3/4, "beast" shell, corvette servo, and wide band, you will be fine... might as well change the EPC solenoid too...
