Shifter Swap

I swapped an 04 GTO in my 83 Trans Am. Well the gentleman who installed the engine stated that the old 305 I guess didn't have overdrive on it???? He says that the notches in the shifter for how it locks when you're shifting from Park, Neutral, Reverse ect need to be redo or the grooves need to be matched. Does anyone know what I mean here? I was told i need a camaro 8ball shifter mechanism...... Does anyone know where to get this?

Your shifter is for a 3 spd and you now have a 4 spd so the shifter gates don't line up with the trans position
and / or you can't engage 1st



So buy a aftermarket shifter like B&M that works for a 4 spd trans like you have

I would be very happy if you posted a picture or 2 of this motor swap, by 04 gto you mean the 6.0? this would be very nice.

Turbo Cheetah SCS is a good shifter, btw.

Dont buy that POS b&m i hated that thing. Put a 4th gen stock shifter in it.

No the 04 was a 5.7. Still I hope it'll be better than the 305. May throw a supercharger on it in a few years. Not sure yet. So if you say the B&m is terrible get like a 98-02 trans am shifter?

I loved my B&M shifter in my last camaro. took some adjusting to get just right, but very fun piece to play with.

if you're looking to keep it simple, just grab a auto shifter out of a later 3rd gen; should be a dime a dozen, easy to come by, and fit right in. they only did the 3sp autos for the first couple years, the 700r4 was much more common
