Using the ls1 but keeping the Classic look
A mechanic is building a Ls1 an the owner wants to put a carb on it. Is it possible yes, So this is using the newer design engine maintaining the Classic look. The problem is the ignition system is 1,500 and were trying to figure out some other less cost of way to fire it..
I had mentioned to him I only experienced this years ago with a 84 Z-28 Ho and we went all motor an it required a different distributor.

There are quite a few threads on here in regards to a carb'd LSX with options in how and different experiences....

I gotta search for that Msd module for a friend an see what distrubs can be used.. Dont know why the guy wants a carb on this ls1 but maybe there is a reason. In data graphs I have reviewed carbs can make more power than tpi an other intakes so maybe that's the case here.

the basic LSx carb swaps don't use a distributor; the ignition box fires the coils. If you want to take a step back in technology, there is a distributor setup that is offered, but its a custom front cover and requires a specific ford distributor. Also very high price tag.

Dude...Ide sooner attach a fake distributor and wires for looks, and hide the coils/real wires, than switch to an actual distributor on an LS1.
If he wants to be that pure about it being a classic look, he should have just went with a SBC...? How's he going to hide the equally spaced exhaust ports? Just sayin...
If he can live without a dizzy sitting on top, which Im betting few people will even notice, then I say just hide the coils and tuck the wires nice. It'll still look like a nice clean old school motor.

Re: Using the ls1 but keeping the Classic look
Having a Ford distributor sticking out of the timing cover is going to look a lot less "classic" under the hood of a Chevy than going with the MSD ignition box. As others have said, I'd take the simplest (and cheapest) approach by getting the MSD ignition box and utilizing the stock coils. By the time you get the carb & air cleaner on the motor, it'll look "classic" enough, provided you hide or relocate the coil packs. To me, having that Ford distributor staring at you as soon as you open the hood will look way more "wrong" than not having a distributor at all.

I think I saw edelbrock (and maybe a few others?) make covers that go over the coils to hide them a bit more out of site, looks a lot like tall valve covers...

Don't know about the ignition system you need, but there are beauty covers that go over the coils that kind of look like big block Chevy valve covers. xpndbl3 showed a picture.
It amuses me when I see people make arbitrary requirements that end up making something less useful or not as good as original.
I have never, not once, at any time ever had a stranger ask me to pop open the hood of any car so they could see the engine. People have no clue if my engines are pink, clean, dirty, big, or small. All they know is they like how it sounds and might ask how it runs. I'll only spend enough time on engine cleanliness to make myself happy because once that hood goes down it won't see the light of day again until it's back in my garage.
