What should I expect to pay for a 5.3?

Ok so I'm really pushing my Pops to build the Trans Am I bought for him a couple years ago. He has expressed interest in using the LS series engines.. So I went to my local yard and asked for a low mileage 5.3 he sold the 6.0 I had been working on him for over a year while I was deployed.. So heres what he has: 2009 5.3 fully dressed...harness and computer.. 15K miles quick price of 1000bucks.. so I maybe able to get it alittle under. But considering I've tried to get a used ls1 and I can't touch one in my area for under 1500 with over 150k miles on it I thought that was a great price. Chime in folks let me know what you think.

You can certainly get a 5.3 for less, but it'll be an older model year and have more miles. Having the harness and PCM is a plus.

Understand you'll need to change things on it to fit into a 3rd gen - intake, exhaust manifolds, oil pan, accessories, damper. And, it'll be drive-by-wire throttle (meaning you need the accelerator pedal as well).

Personally, I prefer the LS-type 4L60E to the 3rd gen TH700. If you're thinking manual transmission, the f-body LS1 T56 is the superior choice.

Re: What should I expect to pay for a 5.3?

That 5.3 is equipped with 243/799 heads.
Same heads as ls2. The rotating assembly is plenty strong.
However, be sure the motor is a 5.3 and not a 4.8
They share same block/heads/intake. externally they look identical.
Crank,rods and pistons are different.
Imo, the 5.3 is a better value over a beat down high miles ls1

When considering a truck motor the longblock, alt and harness are the only things you'll use, so over $500 isnt that appealing
