'86 IROC 5.3/T56 Build-Phase I

Here I go with my build thread. I bought an '86 IROC roller that gave me a pretty good foundation to start with. It had already be converted to a 5-speed before the previous owner tore it down to put a 6.0 in it. Needless to say, he didn't get it in there before he decided to sell the car.

Phase-I will consist of the drivetrain installation.

Here is what I'm starting with as far as the car its self is concerned.

The interior is in decent shape but the seats are a little less than decent. The big bonus is that the dash pad is PERFECT!!!

It has a posi rear with 3.73 gears and subframe connectors are already welded in. It has the larger diameter sway bars and disc brakes all around.

I'm starting this thread a little late so there aren't any tear down pics but I wanted to get my thread started for the assembly part. I'm going to take some pics of the car tomorrow as it sits currently.

For now, here is what I have bought for my swap.

2001 LM7 (stock) and it's PCM
LS6 intake
2000 T56 (stock)
2000 Fbody LS1 accessories
Built my own headers (Kit) 1-3/4" primaries into 3" collectors
T56 trans crossmember from Hawks

I'm currently modifying a truck harness (per Pocket's instructions in the stickys) and extending it to mount the PCM under the dash in the stock third gen location.

I made my own motor mount adapter plates and notched the stock K-member for oil pan clearance.

I decided to go with the third gen manual pedals and the stock 4th gen hydraulics. I'm sure there is other stuff to mention but I'm to tired to think of them off the top of my head right now.

The stuff that is on the docket for purchase is an in-tank fuel pump that will fit in the stock third gen sender and the corvette filter regulator. I'm also going to buy an electric speedometer that will fit in the dash behind the stock trim bezel and hopefully, somewhat, resembles the stock speedo. If anyone knows of such a speedo and where to get one, please let me know!!

That's all I have tonight. Gotta get some sleep so I can go play in the garage tomorrow and hopefully get something done!

P.S. how do I post pics in the text area instead of the thumbnails at the bottom of the post?

I went with Autometer electric speedo and tach. One size is too big, the other too small.
I went with the small ones and had someone modify my cluster box so they fit in. Plastics specialist.
Can't seem to come up with the straight on shot I had.
Changed dash to 85 'bird. Looks like they are Frenched in there.
With the big ones, I think you have to start again with your dash.
Good luck with the swap.

3 3/8"
The big ones are 5"- and too big.
Post #40, on page one, has a better shot of how they look.

Nice!! I wanted to do a 6 speed with mine, but I didn't have the trans for it. Looking forward to seeing the progress with this one.

Yeah, I was trying to resist spending the money on the manual but it's just so much more fun banging gears under heavy throttle!

Re: '86 IROC 5.3/T56 Build-Phase I

I decided to go with an in-tank fuel pump and the corvette filter/regulator. I got the pump on Thursday and got it installed in the stock sender. Friday I got it back in the tank, the tank installed and the rear back in. Now I'm just looking for fuel lines and fittings. My next step is to pull the control arms off my parts car and get them cleaned up and painted. Once that is done I'll get the engine/trans bolted back in. I'll post some pics when I get that done. Hopefully in the next few days.

Been a while since I've posted anything, so I'll give an update real quick. I've been doing little bits here and there and doing lots of research. Got the suspension and steering back together. Engine and trans are back in and sittin' pretty. Got my fuel lines ran and replaced the rear brake line.
