LS1 (99-02) plastic fuel tank swap...fuel pump canister

Which fuel pump canister to run on a LS1 plastic tank swap?

There may be two options, V8 and V6 canisters.

The V8 canister has a fuel pressure regulator in it on the return circuit set to 58 psi. (redundant on third gen)

The V6 canister has a return circuit that goes straight to the pump without a regulator in the way.

The question i have is does the V6 canister also have the venturi system in it?

If the answer is "yes" then for a third gen LS1 plastic fuel tank swap the fuel pump canister of choice is the V6 canister over the V8.

There are 255 LPH options for both V6 and V8 but the V6 needs to be confirmed. The W-body people have been swapping in 255 pumps for a long time including myself. I have experience in the w-body V6 fuel canisters but this will be my first LS1 fuel pump canister i do.

Any information on the V6 fourth gen fuel pump canister will be appreciated.

Nick

The V6 has a venturi system but it is a slightly different design from the V8.

Most people that swap pumps in these also cause the venturi to no longer be functional.

If you plan to run an aftermarket pump, then get the V8 version & buy a Racetronix pump that retains the venturi system. It is a direct fit. The internal regulator is very easy to remove.

i dont plan on just removing the regulator and leaving it open to spray or dribble from the top.

The plan is to have both the return and venturi functional even if i have to use a w-body bottom half.

I believe the main difference in the v6 and v8 is the outside diameter of the pump, but it is something i will have to to check before ordering a fuel pump.

The goal is to keep the bucket full with venturi and return fuel flowing to the bottom.

If you remove the entire regulator (not just the metal part) the nipple points directly into the bucket. You can add a hose to this (if you feel the need) to direct it to the bottom of the bucket.

Why would this be redundant on a 3rd gen? If you're running an LSx, keeping the regulator means less plumbing and less fittings compared to a hokey vette filter setup. spending $50 or more on fittings to run a $10 filter never seemed cost effective to me, especially if you're going to run a 4th gen tank.

Only other reason to remove would be if you're running another injection setup with a lower pressure. Which is what I did, I bought the Racetronix pump retaining the venturi and I removed the regulator for my "TPI" based EFI and I had no issues with keeping the bucket full, no hose pointing to the bottom of the bucket
