Doing LS swap - Exhaust Questions

Hey guys I have purchased the racing innovation headers and hawks off-road y pipe with 3 in out. Doing an ls engine swap in my car now and getting ready for exhaust.

Need rest of exhaust system and was looking at the Magnaflow 16829 system. I'd like to be able to bolt it together under a lift and not have to fabricate anything. Wanted to get your opinion and see if I was on the right track. Any suggestions would be helpful if I am going in the wrong direction.

Thanks,
Bryan

Re: Doing LS swap - Exhaust Questions
I have the 16829 catback on my swap and I will say it fits very nicely, but I made my own y-pipe so I can not speak to how well it will fit with the Hawks piece. My guess is that it will require some shortening of the Magnaflow kit in order to bolt up to the new y-pipe. I used the flowmaster merge similar to what the Hawks piece uses and had to cut about a foot or 2 off the kit.

Do you like the sound of the magnaflow? I have had flowmaster in the past and it was just ok, however I didn't delete cats, and such with it.

Re: Doing LS swap - Exhaust Questions
I had a Flowmaster on my LT1 swap and for me I love the sound of my Magnaflow. The Flowmaster was too raspy at cruising speeds, but sounded great at idle. I ran both without cats as well.

Re: Doing LS swap - Exhaust Questions
How well does the hawks y-pipe mate up to the racing innovation headers?

I haven't put them together yet, but will know probably in the next week. Will update then. My suspicion is that it shouldn't be any problem at all.

Re: Doing LS swap - Exhaust Questions
I was looking at the Racing Innovations Headers they now advertise for 1 5/8 primaries. Is that really enough for the LS engine?

Re: Doing LS swap - Exhaust Questions
If you are going for max power no, no enough at all. Hawks with 2" primaries would be best. But the racing innovation are much better than stock ls manifolds and at $305 shipped to my door huge bargin.

I'm looking to get about 400RWHP/400ftlbs or so. Like you said HUGE BARGAIN.

Yeah they'll support that couple of members with dyno sheets to prove it.

Re: Doing LS swap - Exhaust Questions
I used the Hawks off road y-pipe, but with 2 1/2" tubes going into the y & a Flowmaster muffler with 3" in/2 .5" outs. A local exhaust shop made the intermediate pipe & tailpipes. The y-pipe was engineered to be slip-fit into the collector's of the longtube headers. I decided to add v-band clamps to both ends of the y-pipe just in case I need to take it apart for some reason down the road.

I bought the budget headers with 1 5/8" primary's from Hawks. I suspect they're the Racing Innovation pieces like yours. The small primaries are better for bottom end torque on a daily driver like mine. For high end horse power, you'd want the larger primaries.

How about a side view on the ground to show ground clearance. BTW looks real good. How does it sound?

Here you go. The lowest part of the exhaust is about even with the deep trans pan (extra 2 quarts).

The sound is ok. I went with Flowmaster for ease & budget, but open to changing to something else if I hear a system I like better on another car.

Re: Doing LS swap - Exhaust Questions
Any updates and maybe some pictures? How is the clearance on the drivers side of the trans? I'm using a lakewood bellhousing with the factory t-5 external slave cylinder do these headers fit too close for me to use them with this setup?

Re: Doing LS swap - Exhaust Questions
I am probably going to get a custom ypipe made by a local guy out of stainless to my magnaflow...

Re: Doing LS swap - Exhaust Questions
I know this is a little old, but how did the hawks Y-pipe mate up to the racing innovation headers?
I'm finishing up my swap, and was hoping I could hack up my Y-pipe from the sbc long tubes that were on there before. It's close, and it works for now, but looking for something a little cleaner.
