Re: Modifying manifolds for my turbo LQ4

Thanks for the comments guys. Right now I'm waiting on my hotside to get back from coating. Once its back, I'll bolt on the WG, do the out from the wg to the 5" DP. I'll do the DP to the fenderwell exit.

Since I want this to be "street and strip", I've attached a pic of how I will interchange between the two.

Re: Modifying manifolds for my turbo LQ4

Its been a while...

Sold my house and bought a new one, moved my stuff to a friends shop and finally had some time to work on the car. Only 2.5hrs worth of time, but thats better than nothing.

I did get my setup back from coating, so now the hotside is coated. I'm not going to coat the exhaust since I'll be wrapping it. I dont have pics of whats coated, but I'll take pics of the entire setup next week since I'll finish it up then.

So anyway, I cut out the battery tray and the overflow reservoir out. Like my pic above, it shows where the exhaust will temporarily run..cold side will get its fresh air on the drivers side "battery tray" area. I have some of the outlet on the IC done, put a v-band on my exhaust so I can interchange between the "race" setup and the "street" setup. Not pictured, but will get pics next week is my alternator. I mounted it on the water pump. Added the elbow to the s475.

I'll have more tubing in next week along with my carb hat and I'll finish up the "race" setup. More pics to follow next week.

Re: Modifying manifolds for my turbo LQ4

90% done on the "race setup" part of the exhaust. Dumps where the reservior used to be...pic of my bracket and where I'm mounting my alternator on the water pump (mock up..I'm buying a new wp) .

EDIT: Attached better pics of alternator setup which allows a little over 1" of adjustment

Re: Modifying manifolds for my turbo LQ4

Not much of an update...pics of intercooler tubing tacked together, needed a silicone coupler to straighten out the turbo --> IC, new Save Phace welding helmet also. Waiting on my CSU Carb hat and then I can finish off the intercooler and move to relocating the radiator out back.

Where did you get that top adjustable alt bracket? Did you fabricate that yourself?

It is part of a RPC SBC alternator bracket. I just kept what you see, cut off about an inch. I'll stop by the shop and see what brand it is if you really want to know.

Re: Modifying manifolds for my turbo LQ4

Got a few minutes in last night to work some more. Used some 3.5″ tubing to make the inlet to the CSU carb hat and then a 3″ -> 3.5″ reducer that connects the out from the intercooler to the tubing going to my carb hat. Painters tape comes in handy as you’ll see in one of the pictures. I used it to tape together the tubing to make sure I had the angle right, that way when I close the hood it doesnt hit the tubing. If I get time I’ll finish it tonight.. (Kinda..I'll just need to add a BOV).

Re: Modifying manifolds for my turbo LQ4

I welded up the rest of the cold side. I just need to blend it a little, add my BOV which will be here tomorrow, recheck for leaks and then drop it off to get coated.

I have to relocate the radiator, do electrical work, fuel pump install etc. I just dont spend alot of time on it during the week because of some work deadlines :-/

Here's my TiAL BOV installed and my main inlet tube being blended..

Re: Modifying manifolds for my turbo LQ4

Looks great. What's the plans for the fuel pump? What fuel are you going to run?

Aeromotive A1000 and e85 for fuel.

Re: Modifying manifolds for my turbo LQ4

I have never personally ran an A1000 pump but I hear they are quite loud. E85 and blow thru is the way to go! Should be a monster once you get it going

Re: Modifying manifolds for my turbo LQ4

Got everything back from coating and also picked up a BG400 fuel pump...hoping it'll work fine instead of an A1000. I also painted the downpipe with some "flame proof" paint out of a can from Autozone. The downpipe will be wrapped, but I painted it anyway.

Re: Modifying manifolds for my turbo LQ4

Havent posted in this thread in a while..mostly do the TTF site and FB...

Anyway..man..its been a while. I had to redo the hotside from the logs to the turbo since it didnt fit with the IC/radiator which also needed to be redone. Decided to go EFI, so then the cold side needed to be redone (I reused some of it).

I havent really done much other than spend money on parts I need. I *was* going to attempt to build my TH400. Bought 2 books, watched some vids..took apart/put back together my core th400 but didnt feel comfortable enough to build the one going in my Camaro.

Stuff I bought for the TH400 came from CK Performance and they even threw in their TH400 tech manual with it for free which was cool.

Bought this for my TH400:
Amazon - Th400 Alto Red Eagle and Kolene steel Deluxe Transmission Rebuild Kit level 2 $221
CK Perf- Competition billet input shaft, forged steel rollerized forward clutch hub, 6 clutch direct clutch housing w/34 element sprag, reverse manual valve body with t-brake, 4 clutch billet intermediate pressure plate, bearing/shim kit, billet sun gear shaft. - $1300

Winners Choice Transmission in PA - TH400 billet converter $550

Speedhut 6 gauge kit slightly customized (they let you change fonts, color of the text, face plate etc)..about a month wait time, it'll finally be here next week. Comes with a 3 3/8" Speedo that runs off of GPS, tach, oil pressure, water temp, volt, fuel - $679

Ebay 102mm LS fabricated intake $400 (I think? I dont remember)
Nick Williams 102mm cable driven throttle body - $400

My "muscle car" oil pan sits too low, so I bought a Fbody pan, pickup, windage tray. Had a -10an fitting installed for the oil return also - $196

SFI Flexplate which is already properly drilled for a TH400 to LS, with the coupler, Speedway - $116

New waterpump, Vette (since I had to switch to Vette balancer) Amazon - $109

Yanked the engine out, installed the fbody pan, then then "eyeballed" the waterpump and the damn thing lines up perfect. I also made my downpipe, right out the fender, 5".

Since I was in a holding pattern waiting for parts to come in, trans to get built, my friend wanted me to fab up a turbo setup for him for his 5.3 LS, so I'll make a thread for it, but in the DIY/JY build.

Here's some pics.
