First car: 1992 Camaro RS Heritage Edition
Hey guys, I almost never post here but now I finally can start posting more because I finally have my first car! It's a 1992 Camaro RS Heritage Edition. It has the 305 V8. Could use a tune up, some front end work, and other things, but I'm really happy with it. Sorry the only pics I have are the one from the Craig'slist ad.

Well I haven't had a chance to REALLY get in there and look at them but I do know there is a hole that needs to be fixed.

Thanks! I usually hate white cars, but the red stripes are just enough. I love it!

Really French? My 92 RS Z03 was Polo green with gold rally stripes. I loved the combo that I am still thinking of getting it back to how it was.
Good purchase, My 92 had the same rust problem on the driver quarter but mine was not that severe. Check the floors and under the carpet, if its rusted that bad there then the floors are gonna have decent problems.

Nice car! I had a 92RS. I have a B&M ratchet in my 92Firebird, is that what you've got there?

Yeah that's a B&M ratchet shifter. Something is messed up with it though, so I'm either going to try to fix it or go back to the stock shifter.

Nice. Pick up some stock 16's with the inserts painted white and that will look really good!

I just plan on getting it back to the way it was from the assembly plant. I need to fix some little things too like the headliner, I need a new button for the console lid, re-aim the headlights, and other "busy" things. Can't wait to get my hands on it though!

I got the car, and actually just went to the RMV today to get the title. I have to keep it at my uncle's because we can't keep an unregistered car at our apartments. That means I can't work on it as much as I would love to. School takes time out too.

Could somebody post a pick of the jack mounted in it's place? I can't seem to figure out how it's supposed to be mounted in the spare tire area. Thanks!

Re: First car: 1992 Camaro RS Heritage Edition
Here's a small update for you guys,I took the interior out a few weeks ago but I didn't have a camera at the time. Here are a few pics of what I have uncovered:

Looks like the heater core leak has run down the side of the floor by the door over time and rusted through and started pooling under the back seat. I can just fix that surface rust with some type of sealer after cleaning it up a bit right? I plan on bringing it to my school and seeing if they can fix the holes and bad spots for me after I register it. What do you guys think?

Here's a couple more pics. (I went over the 10 photo limit)

Forgot to mention my jack points have been destroyed. We were checking the steering a couple weeks ago and we had to jack from the front subframe. Anyway to fix that? Obviously welding will be required, but what exactly would need to be done? I can live without the jack points, but it would be nice to have them.

Good Luck.
How does that big hole affect the structurability of the car/frame???

Re: First car: 1992 Camaro RS Heritage Edition
Actually that bog hole doesn't affect the structural integrity much at all. It's not near the sub frame so that's good. The only bad thing is that the hole goes up the side of the door (rocker?) I'm sure it can be fixed with some sheet metal welded in. It looks worse than it is. Most of it is surface rust. The only really bad spots are where the holes are. I plan on sanding away the surface rust and covering it with some type of rust sealer or something like that.
I have another hole in the rear passenger wheel well. Could I patch that with a fiberglass repair kit? It's about the size of a small fist. Maybe a 3-4 in. diameter hole.

If that is surface rust, I thought the small rust I have here in the south on my 67 charger was surface rust.
Just my opinion but that is scary looking rust.
Maybe I am just not use to dealing with it other than rust mites or surface rust but something like that would definitely say it is a no sale for me.
Good luck.

The part that I say is surface rust if like in rear seat well. That isn't even really rust as it is more of a "stain". I will get it fixed.
SO to ask the second question again, would the fiberglass repair kit work?

Re: First car: 1992 Camaro RS Heritage Edition
My plan is to remove as much rust from the floor as I can by myself (clean up the surface rust and prep it). Then I will have somebody fix the holes and then I want to put some type of rust treatment on it, such as POR15, but i'm not sure what to use. I want to put an undercoating on the bottom of the car too, any suggestions for that?

Re: First car: 1992 Camaro RS Heritage Edition
You guys say it's a lot, but it's nothing compared to what some other people have on this site. I can't get another body, so that's out of the question. Besides, this car is my first and it has a lot of value to it. Lost of my family members had camaros in there life. My uncle had a 91/91 camaro rs for his first car. My dad had a sport coupe at one point, and others did too. I hope I can fix up the floors. Other than those spots, the car is basically perfect!
So what process should I take on the floors?

Re: First car: 1992 Camaro RS Heritage Edition
well anything can be done,
sand blasting is the best way to remove but messy. Maybe get a good quality DA (dual action) sander. I just picked up a electric dewalt multi speed with filter for 60 bucks. Tackle it with some 60 grit sand paper and work up to 150 or 220. Get some rust mort or Por-15 Thats a chemical in which converts rust to magnetite or some other non-corrosive inert material, arresting rust in its tracks, and enabling you to paint over the top of it.
Fixing the bigger holes is another issue, I would cut out the bad area and make yourself a patch panel out of cardboard first then transfer to sheet metal of at least the same thickness as the surrounding area.
this is my 2 pennies that would get you started, it wouldnt hurt to check out some books on body repair to get further details. But I too have seen cars way worse then what I see on yours. Good luck and have fun with your camaro, keep us posted and we all love pics here.

My plan actually was something like that, sand the rust away and use por15 or something like it. I'm going to see how much it'll be to have the collision shop at my school fix the holes. I'll definately have pics when I get started on this.

Well to me I just think "no better way to learn!" That's what this car was supposed to be for me, as a first car and a project car. I love to work with my hands and to put some blood sweat and frozen tears (at this time of year) into this car means a lot.

It sucks because I don't even have a garage to work in. I have to drive a half hour to work on the car because it's at my uncles house. I just hope he shoveled the snow away from the car.
But yes, I plan on doing tons of research on top of the research i've already done on here and other websites.

Re: First car: 1992 Camaro RS Heritage Edition
lucky for me, Im in Michigan where the housing market is probably one of the worse, but for me it worked out great. At my young age I picked up a great house with a 3 car garage and all insulated. To bad your not close to me cause you could use half of it.
But maybe you could look into those portable garages, you could use it to cover the car, and use a propane heater when you want to work on it. As the weather breaks you"ll find yourself working on it more and more.
Like the others said, take you time and do it right, ask alot of questions and if your like me you"ll learn by watching others and doing it with your own hands. Glad to see your keeping her from the junk yard

Re: First car: 1992 Camaro RS Heritage Edition
I thought about getting some type of temporary "garage" to work in and cover the car, I know my uncle has one of those part tents that holds up, but that probably wouldn't hold up to the snow.
I will ask a lot of questions for sure, and I know it's a lot of work for me, but i'm willing. I hate seeing third gens in junkyards and beaten up. Far too many people around here don't know what they have.

I need a little help here...I asked this in an earlier post, but never got an answer. I dropped a screw and 2 small sockets down the defroster vents!
How can I get them back? Do I have to take the entire dash out? Or is there an easier way. I'm sure this has happened to a lot of people.

Thanks for the good luck.
I know they make floor pans, I just can't afford new ones. And I don't know how to weld them in. I'm going to bring the car to the collision shop at my school and have them weld it up for me.

POR-15 will help with the surface rust, just make sure to apply to the underside of the problem area(s) as well to coat from both sides and get the proper protection.
You might want to post up/ask questions in the "Body" section and get more advice from there.
Good luck.
