My 92 RS Project

I've been a member of this board for few years now. I've been wanting a 3rd Gen since I got my drivers license but due to 1 reason or another I've waited till now to get one. I've spent most of my time in the 2nd Gen Cavalier Z24 world and more recently MK4 VW's as my daily driver is a 2003 GTI VR6. Actually this isn't my first 3rd Gen. My first one was an 88 IROC roller project I bought in Jan 2011 that someone decided to convert to T Tops and did a very bad job doing it. The car ended up ended up being such a money hungry project I abandoned it when I found the 92 Camaro RS (pictured below) from Florida I just bought.

I live in Quebec so rust free cars at reasonable prices are had to find here. I scored it for $2500 Canadian which here is dirt cheap for a rust free car. It a 3.1 V6 with a auto trans originally teal that's been badly painted black. For now it'll be sporting the wheels off my former IROC project.

Future plans for the body include an IROC grill & foglights, the non aero skirts, some tints and eventually paint.

Even though the car runs perfectly the drivetrain will replaced with 89 350 TPI bottom end & 90 TPI 305 top end, maybe with a cheap cam while I'm in there. I should also mention that in Feb 2011 I bought a 90 Trans AM TPI 305 5 speed car for parts so the 5 speed will be swapped into the 92.

I've got headers and a Borla cat back that came on the IROC that will also find their way onto the car. Not sure what I'm doing about a diff. I have 2 3.08 posis and a 3.23 open diff and I'm hoping to use the 3.23 gears on with one of the posis or find a 3.42 posi rear disc rear end.

I've got a Megasquirt from a former cancelled project that I'll eventually start using so I can tune for further mods in the future.

Hopefully I'll have the car ready for use in the spring. The only difficult part in the drivetrain swap is cutting the holes for the shifter and clutch master. I still have a few parts to buy to complet the swap but I'll eventually get them over the next few months.

Re: My 92 RS Project

After many huge delays I'm finally working on the car. The V6 Auto drivetrain was sold to my co-workers son for his firebird project. For now my car will end up with the 305 TPI I got from the Firebird. Unfortunately the 2 350's I have need a lot more than I had originally thought to be useful and I can't have the car dead in my garage over the winter so I'm stuck with the 305.

I got a great deal on some intrax lowering springs and have some new gr2's coming all around. The sway bars, wonder bar and steering box from the Firebird have also made their way onto the car. Most of the interior was removed to do the wiring for the stereo, exhaust cutout and the afr & fuel pressure gauges (future use with megasquirt).

The firewall and floor have been cut for the manual transmission conversion and the engine mounts have been moved and replaced with poly inserts. The brake line was easy to deal with.

I have a few parts on the way still and some minor issues to deal with but everything looks good to have it ready in 2-3 weeks. Just in time for winter lol...

Re: My 92 RS Project

So winter 2012 went by and spring 2103 came and this car has been nothing but issues. Cold start issues, hot start issues stalling, bad idle etc... All that was chronicled in these threads..

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...not-start.html
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...tpi-305-a.html

I'm relatively sure I'm having injector issues but will leave the problems solving in the other thread. The 305 TPI was always intended to be a temporary motor in the car so I could practice tuning with the megasquirt. Wouldn't bother me too much if I hurt an almost worthless motor.

Between the problems and the spectacularly dissappointing performance of a 305 TPI T5 3.23 gear combo I've decided I'm done with this setup and I'm accelerating my plans with a major spring build on this car.

The new engine will be a RamJet 350 (Almost) Clone that 's outlined in the in this thread.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...ne-almost.html

Trans will be a a T56 and an LT1 Rear end with 3.42'a will also find their way onto the car. The rear suspension will updated with and Adj panhard bar, LCA's and LCARB's. I already have an adj Torque arm ans T56 trans mount with relocated torque are mount which will be installed at the same time. I'll also get around to installing the Iroc/Trans Am steering box that I didn't get a chance to do last time cause I didn't have a pitman arm tool.

I'll also be installing some Baer Brakes Front & back.

I've got some some 17 wheels & with 275 tires that we're on a 4th gen that I will be using. See the crappy blurry pic below.

Re: My 92 RS Project

Good luck on the build. I like black on these cars. Any ideas on what you will paint the car?
