Small minds = small finds, when looking for a project car first glances and a few photos are no way to judge a car. You gotta have some vision. It's hard to find a solid 3rd gen or anything here in Ohio. With some work time and $$$, that car will be fine. 90% of project cars in the junkyard from this board? Really? I seriously doubt that, where do you get your figures from??? Sometimes the things I read on this board crack me up, pimps? Roaches? Cocaine? WTF? All from looking at a couple of pics, wow glad my thought process is not that narrow and skewed....

I think the guy lucked out bigtime on the floors, but I'd still pass on a car with a roof transplant, and a poor one at that. For the time and money it would take to do that car right, you could buy a low mileage original and spend the next three years driving it.

Open your eyes, very few projects here make it beyond the "temporary" Rustoleum stage, which is a shame. Many more end up in the classifieds for parts.

That's some nice work. Yeah, I wouldn't ever want mine that low. Some drop spindles and hangers will prob. be good enough for me. What did you do with the wheels/tires off your parts car. I'm kinda interested in them if they survived the crash ok. What size are they?

Re: what would you pay?

well it started just a tid bit of usefull info check fuses the fuse was bad after replacing computer distributor ignition controll module. the inj2 fuse was bad i checked it and it looked good but wasn't even shined a light from behind through it and i would still say it was good but once i switched it out. both side injectors started working. didn't run great but ran cleaning the plugs might just change them. but motor runs . it did need the distributor even tho it didn't fix the issue. it was very hard to turn by hand.

Re: what would you pay?

well swapped out the rear from a 2.73 posi to a 3.08 posi i had laying around. new distributor ,new battery, new computer, alls to fix a fuse that was bad but didn't look bad. still need to clean the injectors it runs for poop. but started fixing the roof once it was ground down alittle it looks tones better. had a body guy come over and check it out and it said it looks good. also put in the gray plastics and the black carpet making sure i have all the pieces needed for the interior. use some metal fill in the sail panels smooth them out. and Da the whole car down. should be in paint in a few weeks. decided to go with the stock color so i don't have to repaint the engine bay. the color is Brilliant Red Metalic. the car did move under it's own power over the weekend pulled it out of the garage to clean the garage and pulled it back in. also pulled the t-5 out of the iroc I'm picking up a th350 with a 3500 stall a complete black interior and a 1le rearend this weekend. so it has been a busy week

been workin on the sail panel and useing a DA to take down all the coats of paint. here's the progress. by the time all is said and done i should have right around $1600 into it. First of the month i will be ordering 1 gallon of primer one gallon of Brilliant red Metalic and one gallon of clear and a gallon of reducer. should have some extra after a repaint. found a set of injectors rebuilt here in cumming at the fuel injector connection for $169.00 after the repaint i will need belt moulding headliner speakers radio window switches. but here is the progress..

Re: what would you pay?

this has kinda become a build thread also just keeping it updated. i have had the chance a few times now to sell it for 3 times what i paid for it and that was without an interior without it running and without the sail panels fixed. a interior would be included but not installed. i turned them all down. after spending the day yesterday replacing the Injectors it runs good now so today i spent the day putting interior pieces back in and getting the inside back to normal main reason for it is with all the parts i have laying around and my son selling off pieces i want to make sure he doesn't sell something i need I put in the new black carpet today. then started at teh drivers seat then moved to the back seat then went to the center console then on to getting the radio and window switches in. i have been sick all week so i was moving slow but just needed to feel like i got something done this week. so here is a few photos the seats came out of the Iroc and i put in the center console. shifter and the high back seats in the iroc also its really hard keeping up with two projects. The iroc now has a th350 and correct shift plate and stock shifter the 5 speed pedals are out and a automatic pedal set is back in. but here's photos of the z28 with interior half in

Re: what would you pay?

once that step was done then i went to sanding the car with a DA. i have noticed a few things during this process. somoe spent alot on the paint job the whole car seems to be skimmed in body filler then primed then black was laided down then silver over that to create the marble look then a tinted purple clear all of this was laid over top of the factory paint so there is about 8 layers of paint on the car thats layers of paint not coats.
Factory primer, factory color, factory clear, bodyfiller skim coat, primer, black, silver, clear tinted purple Yikes to much the hood weighs about 50 pounds .

Re: what would you pay?

and a update about the mechanicals the car now runs and i have driven it around the sub to see how it drives. total to get it running was new distributor, new computer, used injectors, battery, plugs and wires. still needs an oil change but it now moves and drives . total in teh car at this point. $500 in the car. $750 in a parts car made all of that back tho plus the $500 used to buy this car so parts car and this z turn out to be free. and have $280 in parts so far to get it running. and that $280 came from selling parts off of the parts car. so so far the car has been free other than labor. and i still have $200 cash from parts sales to put into the car. parts needed at this point to finish the car Good primer base clear headliner and door panels t top weather stripping. and get the colume rebuilt it's loose to the point the ignition swith sometimes doesn't work to shut the car off. and of course tires and center caps. then need to rebuild drivers window. no tracks are in the door to hold the window. still bedating on weather to put the blistens on here or on the iroc. I also picked up a complete tpi setup which is where i got the injectors from it also came with the distributor cover which i was missing so i now have that to.

Looks to be coming along quite nicely! How much are you going to end up spening on the paint job?

It would be great if you could give a sort of guide to how you're doing it. The previous owners of my car painted right over the factory paint with no prep work whatsoever, it is now peeling off the car and I want the original black back, but I don't want to break the already small bank to do it.

Re: what would you pay?

in this case it was simle power wash off the clear and some of the custom paint then get out the DA and start smoothing and removing layers of paint take your time it's been a few hrs a night for a week to get half of it done. i have some spots that are bare metal so for the time being i sprayed rattle can primer on it just to cover it so it doesn't rust in the humid weather. now the plan is to finsh the passenger side then remove the rattle can primer and shoot with etching primer. once that is done wet sand with 400-600 grit. then spray with the color Base. then spray clear. Since i am not a body man i can about bet i will need to cut and buff the clear thats the plan as it is right now the z has been put on hold for a few weeks while i get the iroc ready for a show in texas. but once back from that. it shouldn't take to long to finish

Re: Started getting it in primer today

Hey man. I totally forgot about this thread. The car is looking great, much better than when you got it. I need to get you to come over sometime to see if you can help me get my Iroc running good. I replaced the engine wiring harness, computer and distributor and plug wires. It cranks but runs rough. I don't know how to tell if it's bad injectors or which ones. The timing seems right, so IDK. I could use a little help.

Re: Started getting it in primer today

my wife wants Black with hugger orange stripes the opposite of the Iroc hugger orange with black stripes. I have always liked the black irocs with the blue stripes. so i was thinking of doing the blue stripes on it so it would lokk stock. but after seeing your car parts in black and seeing the pics in your post of the two tone cars red with the black top I was wondering how it would look with hugger orange sides and the black top. so i seen a vw bug on you tube that is painted hugger orange with black top and it looked really good but i don't have enough hugger orange left after doing the iroc so i will probably just go Black. I already have the black and i have about a quarter gallon left of the hugger orange and I also have a pearl blue gallon that my son wants to paint his truck. so i thought maybe blue with the black i just can't find that perfect line to do a two tone on a camaro. so like said probably Black with the blue stripe

Black and metallic blue would be sick. I like the sound of that.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-UP300/ Black

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-UP328/ hugger orange

and here is the blue

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-UP310/

I had read somewhere that if you want a deeper black to go with single stage so thats what i did. One good thing about is if i don't like the shine when finished i can always hit it with a clear

some more So much for 90 days in the clasifieds for parts hope you enjoy. and after selling off part from the parts car and useing that money to fund this car. with paying for both cars this one and the parts car and buying all the parts to get this one running and painted right now I am out $2.00 out of pocket. can't shake a stick at that price.

Let me know get a set of noid lights they will test your injectors for pulses and if there bad i think the light won't work either

Cut and Buff

Well here is some progress. I start off with 1500 on an orbital dry then move to 2000 wet by hand then move to 4000 on an orbital wet then with a wool pad i come back with a paint cleaner and that puts a nice shine to it then i follow that up with polish with a wool pad . still have a bunch of steps with chemical guys stuff all the way up to 50/50 but first time around I am stopping at the polish until i get it put back together .

She's looking great man! Are you putting blue racing stripes on or the stripes that go around the gfx?

the phoenix graphix iroc stripes for the 90 Irocs minus the Iroc door logo's. It's the blue and black stripe.

I like it. I have a second blue IROC totally torn down and am deciding which way to go. Did you like the Summit Paint? That is the same stuff I was thinking about doing.

Re: 1991 Z28 start to finish build thread

started reassembly last night . don't mind the gap the hood is open in the photos. can't wait to get it outside. the garage never shows the true look of the car I found that out with the iroc. i have a total of 6 florecent lights in the garage 4 lights of 2 bulbs on the wall one light of 4 bulbs on the ceiling and one light of 2 bulbs on the ceiling. the room is very bright.

It sprayed great. my first paint job was with tcpglobal ss urithane this time it was summit ss urithane and both worked great I have spent the week sanding tho because I'm not the greatest painter. Ihit it with 1500 dry on a orbital then hit it with 2000 wet by hand then hit it with 4000 wet orbital then paint cleaner with a wool pad then polish on a wool pad .
