"Ole Becky" My Gifted 1984 Camaro Thread

Hello ThirdGen Members,
I was gifted a 1984 2.8l v6 camaro by my uncle for good grades and etc. It was a free, and running car and that was all I cared about really. we towed the car home and this is basically was broke or missing.(so far)

Needs Work

-WeatherStripping Rotting(Need Suggested Sites)
-Pretty tattered Interior
-Dash Cluster Lights Not Working

Fixed or Replaced

-New Brake Calipers
-New 6x9 Speakers
-Engine Coolant Tank From JY
-New Ignition Lock Cylinder
-Rubber Fuel Line Replaced Because of Dry Rot
-Got 2 Parking Brake Bar From JY to Fix Parking Brake
-Both Rear Wheel Cylinders Replaced
-Driver Side Brake Line Replaced
-New Master Cylinder
-Both Front Rubber Brake Hoses Replace(Fixed Our Brake Problem)
-Old Car Smell Out With Some Shampoo & Black Ice Spray
-Replaced Fuel Pump Rubber Hose(Cracked)
-Replace Power Steering Pressure & Return Hose
-New Aftermarket Radio with 6.5in Speakers in Dash
-Fiberglass Hood
-Temporary Interior and Carpet

For a first car I cant complain. I have lots of help from my Dad who is a mechanic. It may not be a Z28 or an IROC but its Mine

Update 1: We have finally done a small test drive. The front brakes were giving us hell for the longest but its fixed now. I will try to post more pictures.

Update 2: I replaced all the interior plastic with gray and and laid a homemade carpet. This are temp, I am starting to collect and restore parts from the JY.

Update 3: I ordered a headunit and a pair of speaker of Walmart.com for 30 bucks. I really wanted the USB and Aux cord ports, I dont care much for Radio. The 6.5in Fit Pretty Good

Update 4: I drove it around my area and notice it was pulling to the left during braking. The Front Right Caliper was leaking and i have a fuel leak from the fuel pump

Re: My Gifted 1984 Camaro

My advise is to find a good body with wiring and instrument panel(gauges) intact and use this as a parts car. Bodies without engines are cheap and easy to come by. It's so much easier/cheaper to have a parts car than to replace and hunt down all the parts you will need for restoration.

Looks like a nice solid car. Congrats! Any idea which wheels it had before the Firebird snowflakes?

The wiring in the car cant be bad. I was able to get a couple of gauge lights before we took the battery out but i wasnt really paying attention to it

Have we no shame? I've noticed a disturbing trend of people seeming to think it's ok to just sell something they received as a gift, either to pocket the cash or to get something else. If someone did that with something I gave them, they would never get anything else from me.

I wouldn't part that car, it's a nearly complete car and it should make a great first car with a little cleaning up and a little helping hand from the ol' man.

Congrats, it's fun to get your first Camaro.

Re: My Gifted 1984 Camaro

i say find a shell with good body parts as a parts car. The body doesnt look too bad from the pics. Just do a nice v8 swap in her to get her going & work from their.

Would this car be considered a sport coupe or the Berlinetta,or are they the same thing.I did a photo search and they seem to be the same. Also did it come with the auto trans. or manual.

berlinettas where "nicer" then the sportcoupe it was a base model usually v6 and manual, not too many options, the berlinettas could get the lg4 and usually had digital dashs and power everything

Re: "Ole Becky" My Gifted 1984 Camaro Thread

tape the wiring harness to the floor pan so you dont end up messing it up with sliding the seat back, simple as that iirc

honestly the oil temp and volt gauges just not being there kinda looks cool

looks like original instrument cluster was replaced with a slightly later one-perhaps 1985,original '84 would have twin-needle speedo and fuel gauges.

Re: "Ole Becky" My Gifted 1984 Camaro Thread

I agree that cluster does not look right for the year and I have not seen one like that in a very long time. The floors look clean, well all but the hatch well rust. I would sand that down and POR15 in there before you put carpet back in. I also hate when I see people on here say to take a complete car and use it as a parts car.

Re: "Ole Becky" My Gifted 1984 Camaro Thread

Thanks. I think I will try to find another cluster at the JY. I never planned on using the car for parts. It was given to me for free so I can fix it. I can't asked for anything better plus it runs fine with only 60k miles. But could be more since the cluster isn't original Lol.

Hey the price was right LOL! Most of us pay for the car then fix it up so your one step ahead already.
