Re: My build for the 3rd time, long story of the Orange Iroc

Oh no. The clearances are set to .0025, rods and mains. The tolerance(roundness and runout) is .0001. In other words, the clearances are to within .0001 of a perfect .0025.

.0025 is a large clearance for use with 40 weight or 20w-50 racing oils and a high volume pump like the Melling.

The Melling P/N of the pump I've used in several engines is 10555. It's a high volume(25% over stock) high pressure pump that accepts a bolt on, 3/4" pick up tube. It comes with an 80psi relief spring installed.

Thats what I thought you meant. Thanks.

I used a stock replacement Melling. Not a fan of High Volume pumps. I typically run
10w30.

Re: My build for the 3rd time, long story of the Orange Iroc

Ordered some slotted rotors for the rear, aluminum hub centric rings for my wheels, and some custom alternator and power steering brackets today.

Underhood almost totally bare metal throughout now, will prime and paint it soon!

Having second thoughts about all the polished aluminum on the engine. My original plan was cast aluminum, but got such a deal on all the polished stuff. Polished will be a pain to keep clean on a daily driver.

Thoughts,

Polished will probably look good with the bright orange paint around it.

Maybe I'll just clear coat it

or Have it all powdercoated silver?

The parts that are polished include;
SLP Runners, Upper Plenum. Valve covers, valve cover breathers, and Timing cover.

What do you guys think?

Re: My build for the 3rd time, long story of the Orange Iroc

I think the polished will be fine if you keep it clean and coated with wax or some other sealer. I wash my underhood every time I wash the body. I use the hot wax at the car wash to coat the motor after cleaning. Then, I spray it down with Black Magic protectant and wipe it down. Anything to keep the aluminum coated. My polished valve covers have kept their shine and my cast plenum and base haven't oxidized like so many I've seen.

Re: My build for the 3rd time, long story of the Orange Iroc

No exciting pics to show progress yet, but I have made a good bit.

Underhood area stripped bare, ready to paint, removed the panhard brace and heat shields so I can drop the tank, to swap in a walbro pump, and patch the access hole cut by po.

Waiting on some parts still.

Hope to get underhood painted this weekend so I can begin some reassembly.

Removed the auto pedals so I can install my 5 speed pedals.

Have an edelbrock strut tower brace on the way too. Probably going to get a founders panhard relocator while I'm down there.

Got some POR15 and topcoat coming to hit the underside of the car as well.

Using mr gasket 146 tpi gaskets as a templete you can see how much porting the slp runners need.

This is the stock base,

Re: My build for the 3rd time, long story of the Orange Iroc

Nice, this motivates me after having my firebirds transrmission blow up twice only after driving it 130 miles since I bought it 13 months ago. Rebuilt my 700r4 twice costing around me 1500$. Once being from wear and tear and traces of water causing the inevitable; the second time 30 miles later my valvebody gunked up and smoked everything. Just finished putting it in two days ago after being shipped the wrong replacement valvebody and not being refunded or swapped for the correct one. Sucks seeing it on jack stands for 10 months out of 13 I've owned it.

Awesome build! Glad to see you still have it and finally getting it back together! Do you have any more details on the wheels? They look good!

Wheels are stern hypermesh II. Fronts are 18"x8.5" rears are 18"x9.5". Going to blast them and may keep the centers cast, and polish the rims. We'll see.

There's a lot of meat to take out of that base!
I'm suprised how much you can open them up, should make quite an improvement.

Still trying to decide on the enginebay detail work.

Polished or cast color aluminum?

Gloss black or semigloss black other part? brackets, stb, strut plates, heater box, brake booster, etc....

Kinda think the bright orange would go well with other bright parts. But then again, I think the low gloss and cast would be a good contrast.

What do you guys think?

Re: My build for the 3rd time, long story of the Orange Iroc

Ordered a 9 bolt aluminum Rear cover today, as well as a Founders Panhard relocator.

Should be painting the under body and underhood soon, then I can begin reassembly.

Went ahead and started stripping the floors to bare metal. I POR 15'd it when I got the car years ago, but I did not do a good job and it did not hold up in some places.

Sanding it all back to bare, will prep well, and por 15 it again, this time I will also apply a POR 15 top coat.

Engine bay will get Epoxy primer/sealer, and a coat of Orange, had a quart mixed up the other day.

Decided to paint the engine block and heads Gloss Black, and the rest of the underhood items will get Black Pearl. Should look pretty good.

Had to order more sanding rolls to finish porting. I picked up some from Harbor Freight but they did not last long enough to make the price savings really a savings. So I ordered more from Eastwood. They last much longer.

Nice, progress is looking good. Great port work on the intake!
Have that girdle waiting for my rear a well, adds some attitude (and support of course)!

Took burned up Drill back to Harbor Freight, no recipt so the lady said
" I can return it this time, but you have to buy a warrenty" So, for $9.99 I got a new drill and a 2 year warrenty.

Just in time too, my sanding rolls from Eastwood showed up today.

Paint should be flying soon, and reassembly will begin!

Re: My build for the 3rd time, long story of the Orange Iroc

Founders Panhard Relocator came yesterday. Very nice.

MSD box I got from a member came yesterday too, not so nice. Waiting on member to respond before I post up, but looks like I am being ignored. Initial Text message replied to very quickly, now no reply.

just wanted to say i like your car Johnny. the orange color looks awesome! id like seeing a few more shots of the ghost stripes if you get time one day. it might look good if you could get the same ghost color iroc decals or airbrushing? your car is coming along nice. what color are you doing the engine bay? nice job on the port work. a carbide bit will make short work of cutting.

Yeah, I am using carbide for knocking down a lot of the meat, then sanding rolls for finish work.

I have thought about the ghost for the ioroc letters as well.

Engine bay is getting matched in orange. Other stuff will be satin black.

Thanks!

I have gone back and forth with the color. HAve been tempted to go back to factory bright red.

I think I've ground enough aluminum off this intake to melt down and cast a single plane intake with!
Here is today's shavings.

Also, got my tank filled for the welder today, andcstarted welding up seams under the hood.
Soon realized I was way out of practice welding!

Going to weld up all the seams on the inner fenders and firewall, just for the heck of it.

What head gasket, intake manifold gasket, head bolts and intake bolts are you going to use? What headers are you going to run?

I am in the process of fixing a bad head gasket and interested in the parts you are using.

Head gasket Fel Pro 1094
Intake Gasket Felpro 1204 or maybe 1205. Got to see if the intake has enough meat to port to a 1205.
